I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.

In order to follow Moses, they were all baptized in the cloud and in the sea.

and they all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.

Yet with most of them God was not pleased, for they were struck down in the wilderness.

Now these things happened as examples for us, to warn us, so that we should not desire evil things as they did,

and so that we should not become idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink; then they rose up to revel.”

Let us not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, so that in one day twenty-three thousand died.

And let us not test the Lord, as some of them did, so that they died by the bites of serpents.

And do not grumble, as some of them did, so that they were destroyed by the angel of death.

All these things happened to them as examples and were written down as a warning for us, on whom the end of the ages has come.

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed, lest he fall!

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength. When you are tempted, he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, flee from idolatry!

I speak to you as wise people. Judge for yourselves what I say!

Is not the cup of thanksgiving, over which we give thanks, a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread that we break a sharing in the body of Christ?

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

Consider Israel according to the flesh: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar service?

What do I mean by that? That an idol’s sacrifice is something? Or that an idol is something?

No! What I mean is that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.

You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and also from the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord’s table and also in the table of demons.

Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

“All things are permitted.” Yes, but not all things are beneficial. “All things are permitted.” Yes, but not all things build up.

Let no one seek his own good, but let each one seek the good of others.

You may eat anything sold in the meat market, without asking questions because of conscience.

For: “the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”

If you are invited to eat by an unbeliever, and you accept the invitation, eat whatever is set before you, without asking questions because of conscience.

By conscience I do not mean your own conscience, but that of the other person. Someone may say, “Why should my freedom be determined by another person’s conscience?

If I give thanks for what I eat, why am I spoken against because of food for which I give thanks?”
