After this, the following thing happened. Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab, king of Samaria.

Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, so that I may make it into a vegetable garden, because it is near my house. I will give you a better vineyard in its place, or, if you prefer, I will pay you its value in money.”

But Naboth answered Ahab, “May the LORD keep me from giving you the inheritance of my fathers!”

Then Ahab went into his palace, sullen and angry because of the word that Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” So he lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and would not eat.

Then Jezebel his wife came to him and said, “Why is your heart so troubled that you do not eat?”

He answered her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, saying, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.’ But he replied, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’”

Jezebel his wife said to him, “Are you not now the one who holds royal authority over Israel? Rise up, eat, and let your heart be glad. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”

Then she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with the king’s seal, and sent the letters to the elders and nobles who lived in the city with Naboth.

In the letters she wrote, saying: “Proclaim a fast, and seat Naboth at the head of the people.

Also seat two worthless men opposite him, and let them testify against him, saying, ‘You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”

The men of his city, the elders and nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had commanded them, just as it was written in the letter she had sent to them.

They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the people.

Then two men, the worthless men, came and sat opposite Naboth. The worthless men testified against Naboth before the people, saying, “Naboth has cursed God and the king.” After that they brought him out of the city and stoned him to death.

After this they sent word to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned to death.”

As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Rise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is no longer alive; he is dead.”

As soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he rose and went down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of the vineyard.

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying:

“Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria. He has gone down to the vineyard of Naboth to take possession of it.
19
You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: You have murdered and also taken possession!’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick up your blood also.’”

Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the LORD.

Behold, I will bring disaster upon you; I will sweep you away and cut off every male belonging to Ahab, both bond and free in Israel.
22
And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because you have provoked Me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.
23
And concerning Jezebel, the LORD also said, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.’
24
Anyone of Ahab’s family who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone who dies in the field the birds of the air shall eat.”

There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do what is evil in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife urged him on.

He acted very abominably by following idols, just as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel.

When Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his body, and fasted. He even lay down in sackcloth and walked about slowly.

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

“Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; only in his son’s days will I bring the disaster upon his house.”
🏰💔⚖️ Summary of 1 Kings 21 – Naboth Killed, Ahab Judged
1 Kings 21 is a story of abuse of power and tragic injustice. Ahab desired Naboth’s vineyard, but when he was refused, Jezebel devised an evil plot to have Naboth killed in order to satisfy her husband’s desire. The Lord did not remain silent: the prophet Elijah was sent to pronounce judgment on Ahab and Jezebel. Yet when Ahab repented, the Lord delayed the judgment. This chapter shows that the Lord cares about justice and still opens the door of mercy for those who repent.
📌 1. Ahab Desires Naboth’s Vineyard (verses 1–4)
➡️ Naboth had a vineyard near Ahab’s palace in Jezreel
➡️ Ahab wanted to exchange it for money or another vineyard, but Naboth refused: “The inheritance of my fathers I must not sell.”

🎯 Greed can disguise itself as an “ordinary desire,” but if it is not restrained, it can bring ruin.

➡️ Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, said: “Do you not now rule over Israel?”

- Accuse Naboth of blaspheming God and the king
- Bring forward false witnesses
- Stone Naboth to death

- Dogs will lick up Ahab’s blood in the place where Naboth died
- Dogs will eat Jezebel’s flesh in Jezreel
