to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

who are guarded by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,

so that the proving of your faith, which is much more precious than perishable gold, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him, and rejoice with a glorious joy that cannot be expressed,

receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Concerning this salvation, the prophets searched and inquired carefully, who prophesied of the grace that was to come to you.

They searched to find what time and what manner of time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating, when He testified beforehand of the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

To them it was revealed that they were not serving themselves, but you, in the things now announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

Therefore prepare your minds for action, be sober-minded, and set your hope fully on the grace that is being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

As obedient children, do not conform yourselves to the desires that ruled you in your former ignorance,

but you must be holy in all your conduct, just as He who called you is holy,

for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

And if you call on Him as Father, who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, then live in reverent fear during the time of your sojourning here.

For you know that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, not with perishable things, not with silver or gold,

but with precious blood, the blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

He was chosen before the world was made, but for your sake He was revealed in these last times.

Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, so that your faith and your hope are set on God.

Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth, so that you may practice sincere brotherly love, be earnest in loving one another with all your heart.

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable seed, through the word of God, which lives and endures forever.

“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass;
the grass withers,
