The Philistines gathered their armies for battle; they assembled at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, at Ephes-dammim.

Saul and the men of Israel also gathered and encamped in the Valley of Elah; they drew up their battle line against the Philistines.

The Philistines stood on the mountain on one side, and the Israelites stood on the mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.

Then there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath, from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span.

He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he wore a coat of scale armor; the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.

He had bronze greaves on his legs, and a bronze javelin was slung over his shoulders.

The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And a shield-bearer went before him.

He stood and called out to the ranks of Israel, saying to them, “Why have you come out to draw up your battle line? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.
9
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”
10
And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight one another.”

When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse. Jesse had eight sons. In Saul’s days the man was old and advanced in years.

The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the war; the names of the three sons who went to the war were Eliab the firstborn, Abinadab the second, and Shammah the third.

David was the youngest. So the three oldest followed Saul.

But David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

The Philistine came forward morning and evening, and presented himself for forty days.

Jesse said to David his son, “Take for your brothers this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp, to your brothers.
18
Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See how your brothers are doing, and bring back some token from them.”
19
Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
20
Then David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the camp as the army was going out to draw up in battle order and raise the war cry.

Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle order, line against line.

Then David left the things he had brought in the care of the keeper of the supplies. David ran to the battle line; when he arrived there, he asked his brothers whether they were well.
23
As he was speaking with them, the champion came forward. His name was Goliath, the Philistine from Gath, from the Philistine ranks. He spoke the same words as before, and David heard them.

When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him in great fear.
25
The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who comes forward? Surely he comes to defy Israel! The man who defeats him will be richly rewarded by the king; the king will give him his daughter, and his family will be freed from taxes in Israel.”
26
Then David said to the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who defeats this Philistine and removes the reproach from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should dare to defy the battle lines of the living God?”
27
The people answered him with the same words: “So it will be done for the man who defeats him.”
28
When Eliab, his oldest brother, heard David speaking to the men, Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the evil of your heart: you have come down here to see the battle.”

But David said, “What have I done now? I was only asking!”
30
Then he turned away from him to another and asked the same thing. And the people answered him as before.
31
When the words that David had spoken were heard, they were reported to Saul; and Saul sent for him.
32
David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart because of him; your servant will go and fight this Philistine.”
33
But Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are still young, while he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock,
35
I went after it, struck it, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. And when it rose against me, I seized it by its beard, struck it, and killed it.
36
Your servant has struck both lion and bear. And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, because he has defied the ranks of the living God.”
37
David also said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Then Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.”

Then Saul clothed David with his own armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail.

David fastened his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So he took them off.
40
Then he took his staff in his hand, chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s pouch that he had, in the bag; his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.

The Philistine came on and drew near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him.
42
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance.
43
The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44
The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.”

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and with spear and with javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head from you; and this day I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts, so that all the earth may know that Israel has a God,
47
and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and not with spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

When the Philistine moved forward to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.
49
Then David put his hand into his bag, took out a stone from it, slung it, and struck the Philistine on the forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead; and he fell on his face to the ground.
50
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone; he struck the Philistine and killed him, though there was no sword in David’s hand.
51
Then David ran and stood over the Philistine; he took his sword, drew it from its sheath, and finished him. He cut off his head with that sword. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

Then the men of Israel and Judah rose up, shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and to the gates of Ekron. And the slain Philistines lay along the way to Shaaraim, as far as Gath and as far as Ekron.

Then the Israelites returned from the fierce pursuit of the Philistines and plundered their camp.

And David took the head of the Philistine, which he had cut off, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put the man’s weapons in his tent.

When Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of his army, “Whose son is this young man, Abner?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”

Then the king said, “Inquire whose son this young man is.”

When David returned from striking down the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine still in his hand.

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
