But David said in his heart, “In any case, one day I shall perish by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape at once into the land of the Philistines; then Saul will have no hope of seeking me any longer throughout all the territory of Israel, and I shall be delivered from his hand.”

So David arose and went there, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maokh, king of Gath.

David and all his men settled with Achish in Gath, each with his household; David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail, the former wife of Nabal, the Carmelitess.

When it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.

Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your sight, let a place be given me in one of the towns in the lowland, that I may dwell there. Why should your servant dwell with you in the royal city?”

So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag; therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day.

And the length of time David lived in the region of the Philistines was one year and four months.

Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for these were the inhabitants of the land extending from Telam toward Shur, as far as the land of Egypt.

Whenever David destroyed the land, he left neither man nor woman alive; he took away sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels, and clothing, and then returned and came back to Achish.

When Achish asked, “Where have you raided today?” David would answer, “Against the Negeb of Judah,” or, “Against the Negeb of the Jerahmeelites,” or, “Against the Negeb of the Kenites.”

David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he thought, “They might report about us, saying, ‘This is what David has done.’” Such was his custom all the time he lived in the region of the Philistines.

But Achish trusted David, for he thought, “He has surely made himself odious among his people Israel; he shall be my servant forever.”
