Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem.

Then Jehu son of Hanani, the seer, went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat: “Should you help the wicked and befriend those who hate the LORD? Because of this, the LORD is angry with you.

Nevertheless, there are some good things found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”

Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. He also made visits throughout the land, from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought the people back to the LORD, the God of their fathers.

He also appointed judges throughout the land, in all the fortified cities of Judah, in every city.

He charged the judges, saying: “Consider carefully what you do, for you judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you when you render judgment.

Now therefore let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Act carefully, for there is no injustice, partiality, or taking of bribes with the LORD our God.”

Moreover, in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites, some of the priests, and some of the heads of the families of Israel to give judgment in matters of the LORD and in disputes. They lived in Jerusalem.

He commanded them: “You must act in the fear of the LORD, faithfully and with a whole heart, as follows:

In every case that comes to you from your brothers who live in the cities, whether cases of bloodshed or of law, command, statutes, and ordinances, you shall warn them, so that they may not incur guilt before the LORD, and wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not be guilty.

And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all the king’s matters; and the Levites shall serve you as officers. Be strong and act, and may the LORD be with the upright.”
