Beloved brothers and sisters, this is now the second letter I have written to you. In both letters I have sought to stir up sincere understanding by reminders,

so that you may remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and remember the command of the Lord and Savior that has been delivered to you through your apostles.

Above all, you must know this: that in the last days scoffers will come with their scoffing, people who live according to their own desires.

They say, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since our fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

For they deliberately ignore this: that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago, and the earth, formed out of water and by water,

and that by those waters the world of that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.

But by that same word the heavens and the earth that now exist are being kept for fire, reserved for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

But this one thing, beloved brothers and sisters, must not escape your notice: that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.

The Lord is not slow to keep His promise, as some count slowness, but He is patient toward you, because He desires that none should perish, but that all should turn back and repent.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will pass away with a great roar, and the elements will be burned up in fire, and the earth and everything in it will disappear.

Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, how holy and godly you ought to live

as you wait for and hasten the coming of the day of God. On that day the heavens will be destroyed by fire, and the elements will melt because of its heat.

But according to His promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

Therefore, beloved brothers and sisters, while you wait for these things, you must strive to be found spotless and blameless before Him, in peace with Him.

Regard the patience of our Lord as an opportunity for your salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him.

He wrote about these matters in all his letters. In them are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do with the other writings.

But you, beloved brothers and sisters, you have known this beforehand. Therefore be on your guard, so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless people, and lose your firm hold.

But grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To Him be glory, now and forever.
