This is what the Lord GOD showed me:
There was a basket of summer fruit.

Then he said,
“What do you see, Amos?”
And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.”
Then the LORD said to me:
“The end has come for my people Israel.
I will no longer spare them.
3
The songs of the temple shall become wailing on that day,” says the Lord GOD.
“There shall be many dead bodies; in every place they shall be cast out in silence.”

Hear this, you who trample the poor,
and bring the needy of the land to ruin,

saying,
“When will the new moon be over,
that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
making the ephah small and the shekel great,
and dealing deceitfully with false balances,

that we may buy the poor for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and sell the refuse of the wheat?”

The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
“Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.
8
Shall not the land tremble because of this,
and everyone who dwells in it mourn?
Shall it not all rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about and sink again like the river of Egypt?”

“And it shall come to pass on that day,” says the Lord GOD,
“that I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.
10
I will turn your feasts into mourning,
and all your songs into lamentation.
I will put sackcloth on every waist
and make every head bald.
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
and its end like a bitter day.”

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD,
“when I will send a famine on the land,
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the LORD.
12
They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east they shall run to and fro,
seeking the word of the LORD,
but they shall not find it.
13
In that day the lovely virgins
and the young men shall faint for thirst;
14
those who swear by the guilt of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan!’
and, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives!’
they shall fall, and never rise again.”

Amos 8 continues the prophetic vision with the image of a basket of summer fruit — a symbol that Israel has “ripened” for judgment. This chapter rebukes economic injustice, market manipulation, and empty worship, then reveals one of the most tragic judgments: a famine for the word of God.
📌 1. The 4th Vision – Summer Fruit (verses 1–3)
“Amos, what do you see?”
“A basket of summer fruit.”
- The Hebrew word for “summer” (
qayits) is similar to the word “end” (qets) - The Lord said:
“The end has come upon My people Israel.”
“The temple songs will turn into lamentation…”
🎯 Just as ripe fruit cannot be made unripe again, Israel too has ripened for judgment.
📌 2. Economic Injustice & Greed (verses 4–6)
“Hear this, you who trample the poor…”
- Their sins:
Waiting for the Sabbath to end so they can return to trade
Manipulating measures & scales
Selling the poor for a small debt
Even selling the dust of grain — total greed
🎯 They “worship,” yet they are impatient to deceive. The Lord notices how we treat the weak.
📌 3. The Lord Will Not Forget This Sin (verses 7–10)
“The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob…”
- The Lord will not leave this evil unpunished
- The judgment:
The earth trembles
All feasts become lamentation
The sun sets at midday
Days become like the mourning for an only child
🎯 Social and economic sin is serious sin. God’s judgment is very real and deeply felt.
📌 4. A Hunger for the Word of the Lord (verses 11–14)
“I will send a famine on this land…”
- But not a famine of food — a famine of hearing the word of the Lord
- People will wander from north to east, seeking the voice of the Lord — but they will not find it
- Young women and young men will grow faint — the younger generation will also lose its way
- Those who swear by idols will fall and rise no more
🎯 The severest punishment is not physical ruin — but when God no longer speaks.

→ Do not delay while the Lord is still speaking. Tomorrow may be too late.
