Understanding the Context of the Bible Through the Ages
One of the questions that often arises among both believers and those who have not yet known God is: “Is all the content of the Bible still relevant for today?” Considering the Bible was written thousands of years ago, many feel that some parts seem too ancient or difficult to understand. But does that mean the message within it is outdated? Let’s take a closer look.
The Bible consists of two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Both were written in different historical and cultural contexts, but they share one common thread: God’s revelation about Himself and His plan of salvation for humanity. Paul himself said, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). On the other hand, the New Testament reveals the fulfillment of the Mosaic law through Jesus Christ, as written in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
This means that the legal parts in the Old Testament are not to be ignored, but understood in the light of Christ’s work. The moral principles and the portrayal of God’s character remain the same and can be applied in our lives today.
The Bible and Modern Life: Still Very Relevant
The Bible may not mention social media, cryptocurrency, or electric vehicles, but the moral and spiritual messages within it remain highly relevant. For example, teachings about love, honesty, forgiveness, and eternal hope are greatly needed in an increasingly noisy and fast-paced world.
Romans 15:4 says, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” So even though it was written in different languages and cultures, the Bible still speaks to every heart longing to know the truth and experience true life.
Back to Basics: A Heart Thirsty for Truth
Rather than limiting the Bible to just a history book or a collection of moral advice, let us read it as God’s love letter to His people. When we approach the Word with an open heart and a thirst for truth, the Holy Spirit will provide fresh understanding and relevance, whether we are reading Psalms, Proverbs, or Paul’s letters.
