Can Christians Follow Korean Culture (K-pop, Dramas)?

Korean culture, especially K-pop and Korean dramas, has become a global phenomenon. Many people, including young Christians, follow the music, fashion, lifestyle, and even the values shown in it. The question arises: can Christians enjoy this culture, or should they avoid it altogether?

God Gives Culture to Be Enjoyed

The Bible teaches that God created human beings with creativity. Every nation has its own unique art, music, and culture. In Revelation 7:9, it is pictured that before Godโ€™s throne there will be people from โ€œevery nation, tribe, people and language.โ€ That means, the Lord values cultural diversity. So, enjoying Korean culture is not sinful in itself, as long as we do it with the right heart.

Culture Is Not Neutral, There Are Implied Values

However, not every element of culture builds up faith. K-pop music or Korean dramas often present values that can influence the way we think:

  • Romanticizing relationships without commitment (free sex, love triangles).
  • Unrealistic beauty standards.
  • Consumerism and a hedonistic lifestyle.
Godโ€™s Word reminds us, โ€œAll things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpfulโ€ (1 Corinthians 6:12). We need to discern, not swallow everything whole.

Guarding the Heart from Modern Idolatry

There are fans who become so attached to K-pop idols that they are willing to sacrifice money, time, and even their faith. That can become a form of modern idolatry. Jesus said, โ€œLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soulโ€ (Matthew 22:37). If our love for celebrities is greater than our love for Christ, that is a spiritual problem.

Making Entertainment a Means, Not the Goal

K-dramas can be entertainment after work or study, and K-pop music can be uplifting. However, entertainment should not replace prayer, the Word, or ministry. We are called to keep Christ first in our daily lives. Romans 12:2 says, โ€œDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.โ€

Wise Ways to Enjoy Korean Culture

  1. Filter the content โ€“ choose dramas or music that do not damage the values of faith.
  2. Limit the time โ€“ do not become addicted and neglect your responsibilities.
  3. Critically evaluate the values โ€“ ask whether the message being shown aligns with the truth of the Word.
  4. Use it for witness โ€“ popular culture can become a bridge for building conversations with friends about Christ.

Conclusion

Christians may enjoy Korean culture such as K-pop or dramas, but with wisdom. Culture is a gift from God, yet we must discern what builds us up and what can pull us away from faith. Our love for Christ must always remain greater than our love for any culture.
