Many people think that having personal ambition is something wrong, because it is seen as selfish or as merely chasing worldly pleasure. But is it really true that Christians should not have any ambition at all?
1. Ambition Is Not Always Bad
In the Bible, we see that Paul himself had a clear purpose and direction in his ministry. He said, “But I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me” (Acts 20:24). That is a form of spiritual ambition: pursuing God’s will earnestly.
This means, ambition can be good when it is directed rightly. What God does not like is ambition that is centered only on ourselves, ignores His will, and hurts other people.
2. Distinguish Between Fleshly Ambition and Holy Ambition
- Fleshly ambition: Pursuing power, wealth, or popularity for oneself. James 3:16 reminds us, “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
- Holy ambition: Pursuing life goals that align with God’s plan, using talents to serve, working hard to glorify God, and making a positive impact on others.
Ambition is not about whether we want to move forward or not, but for whom and for what we are pursuing it.
3. Ambition and the Talents God Gives
Each person is given different talents (Matthew 25:14-30). God wants us to develop them, not hide or bury them. So if someone has the ambition to become a doctor, teacher, entrepreneur, musician, or anything else, that can be one way God uses them to bless many people.
Personal ambition can be in line with God’s mission if we surrender it to Him.
4. The Danger of Uncontrolled Ambition
However, we also need to be careful. Ambition that is not submitted to God can cause us to fall. Many people lose integrity, sacrifice their families, and even leave the faith because of misguided personal ambition. Jesus Himself said in Mark 8:36, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
Ambition must always be weighed against eternal values, not just temporary success.
5. Healthy Ambition in Christ
A Christian may have ambition, as long as:
- The goal is not merely to make a name for ourselves, but to glorify God.
- The way we pursue it does not go against God’s Word.
- We are ready to submit and allow God to change our direction if our ambition does not match His will.
- It becomes a blessing to others, not only to ourselves.
6. Conclusion
Christians may have personal ambition, but that ambition must be aligned with God’s will. Holy ambition will make us work hard, remain faithful, and bear fruit, not only for our own interests, but also for the Kingdom of God.
So, do not be afraid to have big dreams. But always ask in prayer:
- Is this for God’s glory?
- Does this bring good to others?
- Am I willing to surrender it back to Him?
If the answer is yes, then that ambition can become God’s tool to shape, use, and bless our lives.
