In this digital era, many people have begun to rely on science to answer the big questions in life. From how the world was formed, to whether God is real or just an ancient myth. But an important question arises: can God and the universe be explained through science? Are faith and science mutually exclusive, or do they actually complement each other?
In this article, we will discuss in a relaxed and honest way how the Christian faith views science and how the two can coexist without negating each other.
1. Science Explains the “How”, Faith Answers the “Why”
Science is great at explaining how something happens. For example, science can explain how rain forms, how a baby develops in the womb, or how galaxies rotate. But science cannot answer why all this happens or who is behind it.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:2)
When we look at the vast and orderly universe, it makes sense to ask: “Did all this really happen by chance?” The Christian faith believes that the order and beauty of creation are not the result of accident, but the fingerprints of the Creator.
2. Science Does Not Contradict Faith
Many great scientists throughout history were actually people who believed in God. Isaac Newton, for example, was not only the originator of the law of gravity but also a devout reader of the Bible. For them, studying the universe was a way to know and admire God more deeply.
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.” (Romans 1:20)
This means, the more we learn about nature, the more we can see who God is. Science is not a substitute for God, but a window to know His works.
3. God Cannot Be Put into a Test Tube
One important thing: God is not an experimental object. He cannot be tested in a laboratory or weighed on a scale. But that does not mean He is not real. Many important things in life also cannot be measured scientifically—such as love, justice, or hope. We cannot put love into a test tube, but we know it is real from its effects.
“Faith is the foundation of all that we hope for and the evidence of all that we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)
The same goes for God. We may not be able to “prove” God through science, but we can see His traces through life, creation, and personal spiritual experiences.
4. The Universe Is Too Complex to Be Mere Coincidence
The deeper science explores the structure of the universe, the clearer it becomes that everything works in extraordinary harmony. From the gravitational constant, the distance from the earth to the sun, to the laws of thermodynamics — all seem to be “arranged” with great precision. Too precise to be said as the result of coincidence.
“He who made the earth by His power, who formed the world by His wisdom, and who stretched out the heavens by His understanding.” (Jeremiah 10:12)
Is it possible that all this just happened because of a purposeless “big bang”? Or rather, was that explosion the first step of God’s design?
Conclusion: Science Answers Partly, God Gives Meaning
Can God and the universe be explained through science? Not entirely. Science can show the beauty and mechanisms of creation, but it cannot explain who the Creator is and why He created. This is where faith comes in, not to replace science, but to complete it.
Faith and science are not enemies. Both can walk together, supporting and enriching our understanding of the world — and of God Himself. Because the more we know His creation, the more we are made to marvel at the Creator.
“Unfathomable are His wisdom and knowledge!” (Romans 11:33)
