This question is not only for philosophers or theologians. All of us, at some point in life, have wondered: Why does God allow this to happen? What is God’s purpose? What is His plan for me? These questions arise from our deepest longing to understand God’s mind. But how far can humans comprehend His heart and plans?
1. God Is Infinite, We Are Limited
One of the first important acknowledgments is this: God is Omniscient, Omnibenevolent, and Omnipotent. In contrast, humans are limited creatures. Therefore, it is no surprise that many of God’s decisions seem confusing to us.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. (Isaiah 55:8)
This verse does not merely tell us to surrender, but reminds us that there is a divine dimension far greater than human logic.
2. Yet God Reveals Himself
Although we cannot fully understand God, it does not mean we cannot know Him at all. In fact, the Bible is full of evidence that God wants to be known, understood, and to have a relationship with humans.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
The Word then became flesh, that is Jesus Christ. The presence of Jesus is the clearest window for humans to know God’s heart. Through Him, we see God’s love, justice, mercy, and truth.
3. The Holy Spirit Gives Understanding
The good news is, God does not leave us guessing about who He is. After Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave the Holy Spirit so that we can understand truth spiritually.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit… he will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
This means, understanding God is not only the result of study or logic, but from a living relationship with the Holy Spirit.
4. We Do Not Know Everything, But Enough to Believe
The Bible does not explain all mysteries. But precisely because of that, faith becomes important. Faith is not “filling the gaps of logic,” but a trusting response to a faithful Person even though we have not seen the whole picture of Him.
“For we live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
We do not need to know all the answers to keep believing. We only need enough light to take a step today.
5. Living in Submission, Not Confusion
Instead of being frustrated because we do not understand everything, the Bible invites us to live in hopeful submission. Like a child who trusts their parents, we are also invited to trust the wisdom and love of our Heavenly Father.
“Oh, the depth of the riches, wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” (Romans 11:33)
This verse does not invite us to stop thinking, but to worship with full awe.
Conclusion: Knowing God with a Humble Heart
So, can humans understand the mind of God? Not completely. But through Jesus, His Word, and the Holy Spirit, we can know God’s heart as far as we need to believe, obey, and love Him. The purpose of life is not to know all the answers, but to live in intimacy with the Giver of Answers.
