That feeling of peace is real. But the question is: can we truly absorb peace from our surroundings?
Science: Our Brain Connects with the Environment
From a scientific perspective, our bodies constantly “absorb” information from the environment, both consciously and unconsciously. Our nervous system is highly responsive to visuals, sounds, temperature, and even scents.
Research from the University of Michigan shows that being in nature, even for just 20 minutes, can significantly reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone). The sound of flowing water, gentle breezes, and natural green scenery trigger a relaxation response in the brain, known as the parasympathetic response. This causes the body to automatically feel calmer.
This means peace is not just a feeling but also a biological reaction.
The Bible and the Flow of Peace
Interestingly, the Bible also implies that the environment can be a channel for God’s peace. Psalm 23:2-3 says:
โHe makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.โ
God did not bring David to a crowded or noisy place, but to green pastures and still waters, places where the soul can be refreshed. This illustrates that God understands humans need supportive environments to restore their inner being.
Jesus also often went up to the mountains or to quiet places to pray (Mark 1:35). Was it just about the location? Not really. It was a space where the distractions of the world were silenced and the Father’s voice could be heard more clearly.
Does the Environment Replace God?
Certainly not. But the environment can be a mirror and channel to experience His presence. When we absorb the beauty of nature, the calmness of a place, or even the simplicity of a peaceful home atmosphere, our hearts become more open to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
However, true peace still originates from God. As written in John 14:27:
โPeace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.โ
God gives peace that is more than just an atmosphere. But the atmosphere can be a gateway to realizing that peace.
So, Can We or Canโt We?
The answer is: Yes, we can absorb peace from our surroundings. But only if our hearts are also open to God. The environment is like a musical instrument; God is the one who plays its melody. Sometimes the sound of water, the wind, or the stillness of the night becomes the “language” He uses to touch our hearts.
So, take time to be still. It doesnโt always have to be on a mountain or at the beach. A quiet corner at home can also be a place where God touches your soul. Because it turns out, when the body and environment are calm, God’s voice becomes clearer.
