“Therefore I will tell you the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in the land of Persia, and the fourth shall be far richer than all of them; and when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all his strength against the kingdom of Greece.

Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great power and do as he pleases.

But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, not to his descendants, and not with the authority he possessed; for his kingdom shall be uprooted and given to others besides these.

Then the king of the South shall grow strong; but one of his commanders shall become stronger than he, and this man shall rule, and his dominion shall be a great dominion.

After some years they shall make an alliance: the daughter of the king of the South shall come to the king of the North to make an agreement. But she shall not retain her power, and neither shall her offspring endure; she shall be given up, together with those who brought her, the child she bore, and the one who married her.

And in those times a branch from her roots shall arise in his place, and he shall come against the army of the king of the North and enter his fortress, and he shall deal with them and prevail.

Even their gods, with their cast images and their precious vessels of silver and gold, he shall carry off as plunder to Egypt. Then for some years he shall refrain from attacking the king of the North.

Then this king shall enter the kingdom of the king of the South, but afterward he shall return to his own land.

Then his sons shall prepare for war and assemble a great multitude of forces; and one of them shall advance against him, sweeping through and overflowing like a flood; and again he shall carry the battle as far as his fortress.

Then the king of the South shall be enraged and go out to fight against the king of the North, who has assembled a great army; and that great army shall be given into the hand of his enemy.

When the great army has been destroyed, his heart shall be exalted; though he has caused tens of thousands to fall, he shall not gain strength.

Then the king of the North will again raise a multitude greater than the former, and after some years he will advance against him with a great army and with much equipment of war.

At that time many will rise against the king of the South; also the violent men among your people will lift themselves up, so that the vision may be fulfilled, but they will stumble.

Then the king of the North will come, cast up siege works, and capture a fortified city; and the forces of the South will not be able to stand, not even his chosen troops, yes, no strength whatever will be able to stand,

so that the one who attacks him will do as he pleases, and no one will be able to stand before him; he will occupy the Beautiful Land, and all of it will be in his power.

Then he will set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and he will make an agreement with him; and he will give him a daughter of women to ruin it, but his plan will not succeed and will not benefit him.
18
Then he will turn his face toward the coastlands and capture many of them; but a commander will put an end to his reproach, and will even turn his reproach back upon him.

After this he will turn his face toward the fortified cities of his own land; but he will stumble and fall and will not be found again.
20
In his place will arise one who sends out a tax collector through the glorious part of the kingdom; but after a few days he will be destroyed, neither in anger nor in battle.
21
In his place will arise a contemptible person, to whom royal honor has not been given; but unexpectedly he will come and seize the kingdom by smooth dealings.

The overwhelming forces will be swept away before him and broken, even also a prince of the covenant.

And from the time that an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully; and he will go up and become strong, though with only a few people.

Unexpectedly he will enter the richest parts of the province, and he will do what neither his fathers nor his fathers’ fathers have done: he will scatter among them plunder, spoil, and wealth; and he will devise plans against fortified places, but only for a time.

His power and his courage will be directed against the king of the South with a great army; and though the king of the South will prepare for battle with a very great and mighty army, he will not be able to stand, for plots will be devised against him,

and those who eat of his food will bring him down: his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain.
27
And both these kings will have evil intent, and as they sit together at one table, they will deceive one another; but it will not succeed, for the end of that time has not yet come at the appointed time.

Then he will return to his land with great wealth, and his heart will be set against the Holy Covenant; and he will do this, and then return to his land.

At the appointed time he will again enter the land of the South, but this second time it will not be like the first,
30
for ships of the people of Kittim will come against him, so that he will lose heart. Then he will return with anger against the Holy Covenant, and he will act: after returning, he will turn his attention to those who forsake the Holy Covenant.

His forces will appear, they will profane the sanctuary, the fortress, remove the regular offering, and set up the abomination that causes desolation.
32
And those who act wickedly against the Covenant he will lead astray to apostasy with smooth words; but the people who know their God will remain strong and will act.

And the wise among the people will make many understand, but for some time they will fall by sword and fire, by captivity and plunder.

While they are falling, they will receive a little help, and many will join them in pretense.

Some of the wise will fall, so that by this means there may be testing, refining, and purifying among them, until the end time; for the end time has not yet come to the appointed time.

The king will do as he pleases; he will exalt and magnify himself above every god. He will also speak utterly outrageous words against the God above all gods, and he will prosper until the wrath is ended; for what has been determined will be done.

He will pay no regard to the gods of his fathers, nor to the desire of women, nor to any god at all, for he will magnify himself above them all.

But in his place he shall honor the god of fortresses; a god unknown to his fathers he shall honor with gold and silver and precious stones and costly things.

He shall deal against the fortified strongholds with the help of a foreign god. Whoever acknowledges this god he shall greatly honor; he shall make them rule over many, and he shall divide the land among them as a reward.

But at the time of the end the king of the South shall engage him in battle, and the king of the North shall come against him with chariots and horsemen and with many ships; and he shall enter the lands, and shall overflow and pass through them like a flood.

He shall also enter the Beautiful Land, and many shall fall; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the chief part of the children of Ammon.

He shall stretch out his hand against the lands, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt; and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall follow him.

But tidings from the east and from the north shall trouble his heart, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and to devote many to ruin.
