Daniel 8

Daniel 8 – Ram and Goat

1
In the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me before.

2
I saw in the vision, and while I was looking, I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in the vision that I was by the river Ulai.

3
I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram was standing before the river; it had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.

4
I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward, and no beast could stand before him, and there was none who could deliver from his power; he did as he pleased and made himself great.

5
But as I was considering it, behold, a male goat came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground; and the male goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

6
He came to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and attacked him with great fury.

7
I saw him coming near the ram; he was enraged, and he struck the ram, broke his two horns, and the ram had no strength to stand before him; he cast him down to the ground, trampled on him, and there was none who could deliver the ram from his power.

8
The male goat magnified himself greatly, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and in its place four notable horns came up, toward the four winds of heaven.

9
Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land.

10
It grew great, even to the host of heaven; and some of the host and of the stars it cast down to the ground and trampled on them.

11
Indeed, it magnified itself even against the Prince of the host; and from him the regular offering was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown.

12
A regular service was appointed in place of the regular offering, and truth was cast down to the ground; and whatever it did, it prospered.

13
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who was speaking: “How long will this vision last, namely the regular offering and the transgression that causes desolation, the sanctuary given over, and the host trampled underfoot?”

14
Then he answered me, “For two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary shall be restored to its proper state.”

15
As for me, Daniel, when I saw the vision and sought to understand it, behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man;

16
and I heard a human voice from between the banks of the Ulai, calling out, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision!”

17
So he came near to where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, son of man, that the vision concerns the time of the end.”

18
While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me and set me on my feet again.

19
Then he said, “Behold, I will make known to you what shall happen at the end of the wrath, for it concerns the appointed end.

20
The ram that you saw with the two horns is the kings of Media and Persia.

21
And the shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the great horn between his eyes is the first king.

22
As for the horn that was broken, and in place of which four others arose, it means that four kingdoms shall arise from that nation, but not with its former power.

23
And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their full measure, a king shall arise, bold in face and skilled in intrigue.

24
His power shall be great, but not by his own power; and he shall cause fearful destruction, and shall succeed in what he does; he shall destroy mighty men and the people of the holy ones.

25
By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his heart he shall magnify himself; and in a time of security he shall destroy many. He shall even rise up against the Prince of princes. But he shall be broken, and not by human hand.

26
As for the vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told, it is true. But you, seal up the vision, for it concerns many days from now.”

27
And I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay sick for some days; then I rose and went about the king’s business. And I was appalled by the vision, but I did not understand it.

“In the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, I, Daniel, received a vision…”

  • Daniel saw this vision in Susa, the capital of Elam
  • This happened before the fall of Babylon, but its content speaks of a future far beyond it

🎯 The Lord gave a specific vision of the future, even long before the events took place.

📌 2. The Ram: Medo-Persia (verses 3–4)

“A ram stood beside the river, having two horns…”

  • Two horns = Media and Persia (the Persian horn was higher because it was stronger)
  • This ram charged westward, northward, and southward
  • No one could stand against him

🎯 Medo-Persia would prevail, but its power was also limited in time.

📌 3. The Goat: Greece (verses 5–8)

“A male goat came from the west… with a notable horn between his eyes.”

  • The male goat = Greece
  • The great horn = Alexander the Great
  • He attacked and overthrew Persia with extraordinary speed
  • After the great horn was broken (Alexander’s death), four horns appeared → the kingdom was divided among his four generals

🎯 History proves it: Alexander died young and his kingdom was divided.

📌 4. The Little Horn: Blasphemy & Persecution (verses 9–14)

“From one of those horns came forth a little horn…”

  • The little horn = Antiochus Epiphanes, a king from the Seleucid dynasty (Greek-Syrian)
  • He:
    • Blasphemed God

    • Stopped the daily sacrifice in the temple

    • Defiling the sanctuary

    • Trampling God’s people

  • The angel asks:

“How long will this vision last?”
Answer: 2,300 evenings and mornings → about 6 years 4 months (the time of desecration of God’s temple)

🎯 This picture also becomes a prophetic foreshadowing of the end-time Antichrist.

📌 5. Interpretation by the Angel Gabriel (verses 15–27)

“Gabriel, make this man understand the vision…”

  • The angel Gabriel explains:
    • Ram = the kingdom of Media and Persia

    • Male goat = the kingdom of Greece

    • Little horn = a shrewd king, full of deceit, destroying God’s people, blaspheming God

“But he will be broken, not by human hands.”
→ Antiochus died in a mysterious way — not by war or murder

  • Daniel was deeply shaken and sick for several days, because this was very heavy

🎯 God reveals the horrors of the future not to frighten, but to prepare and strengthen His people.

📖 Main Lessons

  • World history is under God’s control, not by chance
  • The Lord reveals the future to His people so they may be watchful
  • Blasphemy against God and His house will not be allowed
  • The Lord sets a limit on evil — in the end it will be destroyed
  • Not every earthly victory means eternal victory

Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

📖 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4

“The man of lawlessness… will exalt himself above everything that is called God… and sit in the temple of God…”
→ A picture of the Antichrist that corresponds with the little horn in Daniel 8.

📖 Revelation 13:5–7

“The beast was given a mouth… speaking blasphemies against God…”
→ Just like Antiochus Epiphanes, the Antichrist will persecute the people and dishonor God.

📖 Matthew 24:15

“When you see the Abomination of Desolation standing in the holy place…”
→ Jesus quoted Daniel about the desecration of the temple.

📖 Hebrews 10:22–25

“Let us draw near to God… and not neglect our meeting together…”
→ When worship is attacked or stopped, that is precisely where our faithfulness is tested.

🎯 Daniel 8 warns us about a dark time, but also assures us that God remains sovereign and will bring evil to an end in His time.
