Do We Need Me Time? Jesus Also Withdrew to Be Alone

In the middle of a busy routine, the phrase โ€œme timeโ€ often comes up as a solution to reduce stress. Whether by reading a book, watching a movie, drinking coffee alone, or simply taking a leisurely walk, me time is considered important so we can stay sane. But as believers, the question is: do we really need me time? Interestingly, the Bible records that Jesus Himself also withdrew at certain times.

Science on the Importance of Me Time

Modern psychology affirms that the human brain needs rest from social stimulation. When we are always connected with other people, whether through direct conversation or social media, mental energy is drained. Research shows that โ€œsolitudeโ€ (healthy aloneness) helps lower stress hormone levels, increase creativity, and improve emotional regulation.

In addition, the parasympathetic nervous system (which is responsible for calming the body) becomes more active when we sit quietly. That is why simple activities like sitting in a park, praying in silence, or journaling can have a healing effect on the mind and body.

Jesus Also Withdrew

The Bible records several times when Jesus set aside time to be alone to pray. In Luke 5:16 it says, โ€œBut Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.โ€ Jesus, who was always surrounded by many people, knew when to withdraw.

Even before making major decisions, Jesus would be still before the Father. In Mark 1:35, it says, โ€œVery early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.โ€

This shows that healthy solitude is not an escape, but a space to strengthen our relationship with God.

What Does Healthy Me Time Look Like for Believers?

So that me time does not turn into selfishness or distance us from responsibility, we need to balance it with spiritual principles:

  1. Fill it with what builds you up, not just empty entertainment. For example, reading Scripture, writing down gratitude, or simply walking while reflecting on Godโ€™s greatness.
  2. Use it to recharge, not to run from problems. Me time should prepare us to serve again, not make us more isolated.
  3. Involve God in the silence. Personal prayer and reflection can make me time an intimate moment with God. As Psalm 46:10 says, โ€œBe still, and know that I am God.โ€

Conclusion

So, do we need me time? Yes, but not to escapeโ€”rather, to recover and become strong again. Even Jesus Himself gave the example that withdrawing is not weakness, but part of a healthy spiritual rhythm. With the right me time, our bodies rest, our minds become clear, and our souls grow closer to God.
