Many Christians have wondered: are the dreams we experience just ordinary dreams, or could they be a message from God? This question is natural, because in the Bible we find quite a few examples where God speaks through dreams. But how do we tell what is truly from God and what is simply the result of our own thoughts?
1. The Bible Records That God Can Speak Through Dreams
From the Old Testament, God did indeed use dreams to reveal His plans. Joseph, Jacob’s son, received visions in dreams about his future (Genesis 37:5-10). Joseph, Mary’s husband, also received guidance through a dream to take Jesus to Egypt to protect Him (Matthew 2:13). Job 33:14-15 says, “For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night…”
This shows that God can use dreams as a means of communication, especially when He wants to remind, guide, or warn.
2. Not Every Dream Comes from God
Even though the Bible records this, it does not mean every dream must be interpreted spiritually. Some dreams arise because our bodies are tired, our minds are too busy, or because of what we saw before going to sleep. Ecclesiastes 5:3 says, “A dream comes when there are many cares…”
This means not every dream needs to be interpreted as a special sign. We must be careful not to confuse God’s voice with our own imagination or worries.
3. Principles for Testing Dreams
How can we know whether a dream is truly from God? The Bible gives several principles:
- In line with the Word: God would never give a dream that contradicts the truth of Scripture. If the content of a dream urges us to do something that goes against the Word, clearly it is not from God.
- Produces peace: Colossians 3:15 emphasizes that the peace of Christ should rule in our hearts. A dream from God does not leave us confused and burdened, but leads clearly and gives assurance.
- Confirmed through prayer and circumstances: God often confirms His will not only through dreams, but also through the Word, prayer, or real-life events.
4. Do Not Rely Too Heavily on Dreams
Although God can use dreams, God’s Word is the primary standard for the life of a believer. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 affirms that Scripture is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
The danger of only seeking signs through dreams is that we can become trapped in personal interpretations and ignore the truth that is already clearly written in the Bible.
5. A Wise Attitude
If you receive a dream that feels very strong or unusual, do not immediately reject it or immediately believe it. Bring it in prayer, ask the Holy Spirit for understanding, and check whether it aligns with the Word. Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God has indeed given signs through dreams, and He can still do so today. However, not every dream comes from Him. Test every dream with the Word, prayer, and peace in your heart. Most importantly, do not let us seek the meaning of dreams more than we seek God Himself. For dreams are only one way, while the Word is the sure guide for life.
