Ecclesiastes 11

Ecclesiastes 11 – Wisdom Guidelines, Counsel for the Young

1
Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.

2
Give a portion to seven, yes, even to eight, for you do not know what evil may come upon the earth.

3
If the clouds are full of rain, they pour it out upon the earth; and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.

4
He who watches the wind will not sow, and he who looks at the clouds will not reap.

5
As you do not know the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the work of God, who makes all things.

6
In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.

7
Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun;

8
therefore, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity.

9
Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways your heart and the sight of your eyes lead you, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

10
Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

🌾📦🌞 Summary of Ecclesiastes 11 – Sowing, Taking Risks, and Rejoicing in Youth
Ecclesiastes 11 is a call to act in faith even though the future is uncertain. Solomon urges us to sow boldly, not to delay doing good, and to enjoy youth with responsibility. In the midst of life’s mystery, faith and wisdom guide us.

📌 1. Sow Even When It Is Uncertain (verses 1–2)

“Cast your bread upon the waters, and you will find it again…”

  • This is a picture of sowing or doing good without knowing the outcome
  • “Give a portion to seven or eight” means: be generous and diversify
  • Do not withhold kindness for fear of loss

🎯 True faith still acts even when the result is not yet seen.

📌 2. Do Not Wait for Perfect Conditions (verses 3–4)

“He who watches the wind will not sow…”

  • The one who keeps delaying while waiting for the ideal time will never begin
  • Life is full of uncertainty — but that is not a reason to be idle

🎯 Do what is right today, not later.

📌 3. Receive God’s Mystery in Creation (verse 5)

“As you do not know… so you do not know the work of God…”

  • There are things beyond human understanding, including the process of life
  • Wisdom means accepting that we do not know everything, yet still obeying

🎯 Faith means moving forward even when not everything is explained.

📌 4. Be Diligent in Sowing from Morning to Evening (verse 6)

“Sow your seed in the morning, and do not let your hand rest in the evening…”

  • Do not depend on only one effort
  • Keep working, keep trying, because we do not know what the Lord will use

🎯 A fruitful life is part of trusting in God’s providence.

📌 5. Enjoy Youth, Yet Remember Responsibility (verses 7–10)

“Rejoice, O young man… follow the desires of your heart… but know this: for all these things God will bring you into judgment.”

  • Enjoy life — but do not forget responsibility and the end of life
  • Put away vexation, avoid evil, for life is short

🎯 Freedom is not without limits — wisdom gives direction in enjoying life.
