In them you once walked, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now at work among the sons of disobedience.

Among them we all also once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and of our minds, and by nature we were children of wrath, like the rest.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

made us alive together with Christ, even when we were dead in our trespasses — by grace you have been saved —

and in Christ Jesus He raised us up also and seated us together with Him in the heavenly places,

so that in the coming ages He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God,

not from works, so that no one may boast.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand. He desired that we should walk in them.

Therefore remember that formerly you — Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those who call themselves “the circumcision,” that is, circumcision made in the flesh by human hands —

remember that at that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

But now in Christ Jesus you, who once were “far off,” have been brought “near” by the blood of Christ.

For He Himself is our peace, who has made both groups one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility,

by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, so that He might create the two into one new man in Himself, thus making peace,
16
and might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross, having put to death the hostility by it.
17
And He came and preached peace to you who were “far off” and peace to those who were “near,”
18
for through Him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.

So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.

In him the whole building, fitly joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
22
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
