These are the heads of the fathers’ houses and the genealogies of those who went up with me from Babylon in the reign of King Artaxerxes:

from the sons of Phinehas: Gershom; from the sons of Ithamar: Daniel; from the sons of David: Hattush

son of Shecaniah; from the sons of Parosh: Zechariah, and with him one hundred and fifty men registered in the genealogy;

from the sons of Pahath-Moab: Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred men;

from the sons of Zattu: Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred men;

and from the sons of Adin: Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him fifty men;

from the sons of Elam: Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him seventy men;

and from the sons of Shephatiah: Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him eighty men;

and from the sons of Joab: Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen men;

and from the sons of Bani: Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him one hundred and sixty men;

and from the sons of Bebai: Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him twenty-eight men;
12
and from the sons of Azgad: Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him one hundred and ten men;
13
and from the sons of Adonikam, the later ones; and these are their names: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them sixty men;
14
and from the sons of Bigvai: Uthai and Zabbud, and with him seventy men.

I gathered them by the river that flows to Ahava, and there we camped three days. When I examined them, I found there were lay Israelites and priests, but I found none among them of the sons of Levi.
16
So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, Meshullam, that is, the heads of the fathers’ houses, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, that is, the teachers,

with a message for Iddo, the chief man at Casiphia. I put words in their mouths to speak to Iddo and his brothers, the temple servants at Casiphia, so that they might bring us ministers for the house of our God.
18
And by the good hand of our God upon us, they brought us a man of understanding from the sons of Mahli son of Levi son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, with his sons and brothers, eighteen men;
19
and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah, from the sons of Merari, and his brothers and their sons, twenty men;
20
and from the temple servants, whom David and the officials had given for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty temple servants, all of them designated by name.
21
Then I proclaimed a fast there, by the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God and seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, for our children, and for all our possessions.
22
For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, “The hand of our God is for good upon all who seek him, but his power and his wrath are against all who forsake him.”
23
So we fasted and sought this from our God, and he granted our request.
24
Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah and Hashabiah, and with them ten of their brothers.
25
I weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels—an offering for the house of our God that the king and his counselors and his officials and all Israel there had dedicated.
26
I weighed out into their hands: six hundred fifty talents of silver, silver vessels worth one hundred talents, gold one hundred talents,
27
twenty gold bowls worth one thousand darics, and two vessels of fine, polished bronze, as precious as gold.
28
And I said to them, “You are holy to the LORD, and these vessels are holy, and this silver and gold are a freewill offering to the LORD, the God of your fathers;
29
watch over them and guard them until you weigh them before the leading priests and the Levites and the heads of the families of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.”
30
So the priests and the Levites received the silver and the gold and the vessels that had been weighed out, to bring them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God.
31
Then we set out from the river Ahava to go to Jerusalem on the twelfth day of the first month, and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the ambusher on the way.
32
So we came to Jerusalem. After we had remained there three days,

on the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God under the supervision of the priest Meremoth son of Uriah, with Eleazar son of Phinehas, and with them were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.

Everything was counted and weighed again, and the weight was recorded.
35
At that time those who had returned from captivity, that is, those who had come back from exile, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats as a sin offering, all of them as a burnt offering to the LORD.
36
They also delivered the king’s command to the king’s satraps and governors of the region beyond the River, and those men gave support to our people and to the house of God.

➡️ Ezra entrusted the silver, gold, and holy articles to 12 priests
➡️ He charged them to guard them carefully and in holiness, because all of it had been offered to God
