What I mean is this: as long as an heir is still a minor, he is no different at all from a slave, though he is owner of everything;

but he is under guardians and managers until the time appointed by his father.

So also with us: while we were still minors, we were held in bondage under the elemental spirits of the world.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman and subject to the law.

He was sent to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if you are a son, then you are also an heir through God.

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to gods that by nature are not gods.

But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and poor elemental spirits and want to be enslaved by them once more?

You carefully observe special days, months, seasons, and years.

I am afraid that my labor for you may have been in vain.

I beg you, brothers and sisters, become like me, for I also have become like you. You have done me no wrong.

Hagar is Mount Sinai in the land of Arabia — and she is like the present Jerusalem, for she lives in bondage with her children.

But the heavenly Jerusalem is the free woman, and she is our mother.

“Rejoice, O barren one who never bore a child!

suffered the pains of childbirth!

For the one who was left by her husband will have more children than the one who has a husband.”

And you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.

But just as in former times, the one born according to the flesh persecuted the one born according to the Spirit, so it is now also.

But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the servant woman and her son, for the son of the servant woman shall not be heir together with the son of the free woman.”

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the servant woman, but children of the free woman.
