After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward shall be very great.”

And Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring; and behold, one born in my house will be my heir.”
4
And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man shall not be your heir, but one who shall come from your own body shall be your heir.”

Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

And he believed the LORD, and He counted it to him as righteousness.
7
Then He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”
8
And he said, “O Lord GOD, how shall I know that I shall possess it?”
9
So He said to him, “Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
11
And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12
Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, a dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.
13
Then He said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted four hundred years.
14
But I will also judge the nation whom they serve; and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
15
Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
16
But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

And it came to pass, when the sun had gone down and it was dark, that behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between those pieces.
18
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:
19
the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
20
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
21
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
🌌 Summary of Genesis 15
After the victory in Genesis 14, the Lord appeared in a vision to Abram and said:
“Do not be afraid, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward shall be very great.”
Yet Abram asked how he could become a great nation, since he had no child. He thought that Eliezer, his servant, would be his heir. But the Lord made it clear:
“One who comes from your own body shall be your heir.”
Then the Lord told Abram to look at the heavens and count the stars —
“So shall your descendants be.”
Abram believed the Lord, and that faith was counted to him as righteousness (verse 6). This is an important verse in Bible theology.
The Lord then confirmed His covenant with Abram through a ceremony of divided animals, which in that time signified a solemn and binding agreement.
In that covenant, the Lord also foretold that Abram’s descendants would be strangers in another land for 400 years (a prophecy concerning slavery in Egypt), but God would deliver them and bring them back to the promised land.
