Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host.

And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had made.

Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creation that he had made.

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, —
5
no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;
6
but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground —
7
then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils; and the man became a living being.
8
Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; there he placed the man whom he had formed.
9
And the LORD God caused to grow out of the ground every tree that is pleasing and good for food; and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided into four branches.

The first was named Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12
And the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and chrysoprase.
13
The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush.
14
The name of the third river is Tigris; it is the one that flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
16
Then the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree in this garden,
17
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day you eat of it you shall surely die.”
18
The LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make for him a helper fit for him.”
19
So the LORD God formed from the ground every beast of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20
The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for himself he did not find a helper suitable for him.
21
Then the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he slept, the LORD God took one of his ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
22
And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He built a woman and brought her to the man.
23
Then the man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.”
24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
25
They were both naked, the man and his wife, but they were not ashamed.
Genesis 2 repeats and deepens the creation account, especially focusing on the creation of humanity in greater detail. God formed the first man, Adam, from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into him. God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, a garden full of beauty and life. There also were planted the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
God gave Adam the task of tending and keeping the garden and of naming the animals. Yet no suitable helper was found, so God created woman (Eve) from Adam’s rib as his life partner.
