After all these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham,” and he answered, “Yes, Lord.”

He said, “Take now your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you of.”
3
So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and called two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; he also split wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place God had told him of.

On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

Abraham said to his two young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there, worship, and then return to you.”

Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, while in his hand he took the fire and the knife. So the two of them went on together.
7
Then Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “Father.” He answered, “Yes, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8
Abraham answered, “God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them went on together.
9
They came to the place God had told him of. Then Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10
After that Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11
But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham.” He answered, “Yes, Lord.”
12
Then He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from Me.”
13
Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram, caught by its horns in a thicket. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
14
And Abraham named that place: “The LORD provides”; therefore it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the LORD, it will be provided.”
15
A second time the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven,
16
and said, “By Myself I swear — declares the LORD — because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your only son from Me,”
17
then I will surely bless you and make your descendants very numerous, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore; and your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies.
18
Through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have listened to My voice.”
19
Then Abraham returned to his two young men, and they set out together for Beersheba; and Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
20
After this Abraham was told, “Milcah also has borne sons to Nahor, your brother:
21
Uz, his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel, the father of Aram,
22
also Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
23
Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
24
And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
🔥 Summary of Genesis 22
The Lord tested Abraham with a startling command:
“Take your only son, whom you love, Isaac… and offer him as a burnt offering.”
Abraham obeyed without hesitation, and the next day he brought Isaac to Mount Moriah. Isaac carried the wood for the offering and asked:
“Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Abraham answered in faith:
“God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.”
As Abraham raised the knife to sacrifice Isaac, the angel of the Lord called to him and stopped him. God said that He had seen Abraham’s faith and obedience, and He provided a ram caught in the thicket in Isaac’s place.
God reaffirmed His promise: Abraham’s descendants would be as many as the stars in the sky and the sand by the sea, and would be a blessing to all nations.
Abraham named that place “YHWH Yireh” (The Lord who provides).
