Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and gave him this command, saying, “You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2
Get up, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother’s father, and take for yourself from there a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3
May God Almighty bless you, make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.
4
May He give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, so that you may possess the land where you are living as a stranger, the land God gave to Abraham.”

So Isaac sent Jacob away, and Jacob went to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

Now when Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there—and that when he blessed him he had commanded Jacob, “You must not take a wife from among the daughters of Canaan”—

and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram,

then Esau realized that the daughters of Canaan were not pleasing to his father Isaac.

So he went to Ishmael and took Mahalath as his wife, in addition to the wives he already had. Mahalath was the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, and the sister of Nebaioth.

Then Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.

He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of that place, put it under his head, and lay down there.
12
And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13
And the LORD stood beside him and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your grandfather and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.
14
Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth in number, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Through you and your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.
15
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
16
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”
17
He was afraid and said, “How awe-inspiring is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18
The next morning, early, Jacob took the stone that he had used for his head and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on it.
19
He named that place Bethel; but the name of the city had formerly been Luz.
20
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I am taking, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,
21
so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD shall be my God.
22
And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be God’s house. Of all that You give me, I will surely give a tenth to You.”

After the blessing incident, Isaac blessed Jacob again, this time knowingly and formally. He sent Jacob to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Laban (Rebekah’s brother), to seek a wife from their family, not from the Canaanite women.
Seeing this, Esau realized that his marriage to Hittite women had not pleased his parents, so he married Mahalath again, a descendant of Ishmael — an attempt to make amends, yet still outside God’s will.
✨ Jacob Dreams at Bethel (verses 10–22)
In his flight, Jacob came to a place to spend the night. He used a stone as a pillow, and there he dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels going up and down and the Lord standing above it.
The Lord declared:
“I am the LORD, the God of Abraham and Isaac… This land I will give to you… I am with you and will not leave you.”
When he awoke, Jacob was afraid and said:
“Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”
He named the place Bethel (“House of God”), built a pillar, and made a vow: if the Lord would be with him and give him food and clothing, he would remain faithful and give a tenth of all he had to the Lord.
