Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in the days to come.

Gather yourselves and hear,
sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father.
3
Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my strength and the beginning of my might,
preeminent in dignity,
preeminent in power.
4
Unstable as water,
you shall no longer be preeminent,
because you went up to your father’s bed;
then you defiled it.
He went up to my couch!
5
Simeon and Levi are brothers;
their weapons are instruments of violence.
6
Let my soul not enter into their council,
let my spirit not be joined to their assembly,
for in their anger they killed men,
and in their self-will they hamstrung oxen.
7
Cursed be their anger,
for it is fierce,
and their wrath,
for it is cruel.
I will divide them in Jacob
and scatter them in Israel.
8
Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
your father’s sons shall bow down before you.

Judah is a lion’s cub;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He stoops down, he lies down like a lion,
and like a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10
The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he comes to whom it belongs;
and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Binding his donkey to the vine,
and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
he has washed his garments in wine,
and his robes in the blood of grapes.
12
His eyes shall be red with wine,
and his teeth white with milk.
13
Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea;
he shall be a haven for ships,
and his border shall be toward Sidon.
14
Issachar is a strong-boned donkey,
lying down between the sheepfolds;
15
when he saw that a resting place was good,
and that the land was pleasant,
he bowed his shoulder to bear,
and became a servant at forced labor.
16
Dan shall judge his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17
Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
a viper by the path,
that bites the horse’s heels,
so that its rider falls backward.
18
I wait for your salvation, O LORD.
19
Gad, raiders shall press upon him,
but he shall press upon their heel.
20
Asher’s food will be rich and abundant,
and he will provide royal delicacies.
21
Naphtali is a doe set free;
he will bear beautiful fawns.
22
Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine by a spring.
His branches climb over the wall.
23
Though archers have attacked him,
and shot at him, and pressed him hard,
24
yet his bow remained firm,
and his arms stayed supple,
by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob,
by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25
by the God of your father, who will help you,
and by the Almighty,
who will bless you with blessings from above in heaven,
with blessings of the deep that lies below,
with blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26
The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
than the bounty of the everlasting hills;
may they rest on the head of Joseph,
on the crown of the head of the one set apart among his brothers.
27
Benjamin is like a ravenous wolf;
in the morning he devours the prey,
and in the evening he divides the spoil.”

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them; he blessed each one with the blessing appropriate to him.
29
Then Jacob gave them this charge: “When I am gathered to my people, bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30
in the cave in the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place.
31
There Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife; there Isaac was buried, and Rebekah his wife;
32
and there I buried Leah as well. The field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites.”

When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up onto the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

2. Burial Request and Jacob’s Death (verses 29–33)
- Jacob commanded that he be buried in the cave of Machpelah, with Abraham and Isaac.
- After finishing his instructions, Jacob died peacefully.
