Genesis 7 – The Flood

1
Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before Me among this generation.

2
Of every clean animal you shall take seven pairs, male and female; but of the unclean animals, one pair, male and female;

3
also of the birds of the air seven pairs, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on all the earth.

4
For in seven days I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will blot out from the face of the earth every living thing that I have made.”

5
And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.

6
Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came upon the earth.

7
So Noah went into the ark with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives because of the flood.

8
Of clean animals and unclean animals, of birds and of everything that creeps on the face of the earth,

9
pairs came to Noah into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.

10
And after seven days the flood came upon the earth.

11
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the windows of the heavens were opened.

12
And heavy rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

13
On that very day Noah entered the ark, together with Shem, Ham, and Japheth, Noah’s sons, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with him,

14
they and every kind of wild animal and every kind of livestock and every kind of creeping thing that creeps on the earth and every kind of bird, every winged creature;

15
from all flesh in which there was the breath of life, pairs came to Noah into the ark.

16
And those that entered were male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded Noah; then the LORD shut the door behind Noah.

17
For forty days the flood was upon the earth; the waters increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose high above the earth.

18
The waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters.

19
And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth, and all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered,

20
fifteen cubits upward the waters prevailed, and the mountains were covered.

21
Then all living things that moved on the earth perished: birds, livestock, wild animals, and every creeping thing that swarms on the earth, and all mankind.

22
Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.

23
So God blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the earth, both man and animal, creeping things and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah remained alive, and those who were with him in the ark.

24
And the waters prevailed over the earth for one hundred and fifty days.

🌧️ Summary of Genesis 7

Genesis 7 continues the story of the flood. The Lord commanded Noah and his family (eight people in all) to enter the ark, together with the animals:

  • 7 pairs of clean animals
  • 1 pair of unclean animals
  • and birds.

When Noah was 600 years old, the Lord flooded the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. The springs of the deep broke open and the heavens were opened — the waters rose until they covered even the highest mountains. All creatures that breathed died, except those in the ark.

The ark floated on the waters for 150 days, and only Noah and those with him remained alive.

📖 Main Lessons

  1. The Lord keeps His word, both concerning judgment and salvation.
  2. Complete obedience brings protection and deliverance.
  3. God cares for His creation – He saves both people and animals.
  4. The flood is a sign of judgment against widespread sin.
  5. The Lord gave time (7 days) before the flood — a sign of His patience.

Spiritual Meaning

  • The flood is a picture of God’s wrath against sin, but also of grace for those who believe.
  • The ark symbolizes salvation in the Lord — only those who are “inside” are saved.
  • Noah’s family becomes an example that true faith can save an entire household.
  • God’s protection is real for those who obey, even when the whole world perishes.
