Everyone has a past. Some memories are beautiful to look back on, but others are filled with wounds, failures, or sins that feel shameful. Many people think a bad past will forever be a burden that keeps them from moving forward. Yet, the good news is that God does not discard our past; instead, He can use it to bring about His glory.
The story of the Apostle Paul is a clear example. Before he repented, he persecuted the church. He was known as Saul, who opposed the Gospel and even approved of Stephen’s death (Acts 8:1-3). But after his encounter with Jesus, his life changed completely. His dark past did not cause God to reject him; instead, it was used to make him a powerful witness of God’s grace. Paul could honestly tell who he used to be, so that others would see how great the Lord’s faithful love is.
God’s Word says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28). The phrase “all things” here also includes our imperfect past. The things that once caused us to fall, when surrendered to God, can be transformed into a testimony that strengthens others.
Imagine someone who was once broken by addiction, but is now restored and able to help others escape the same trap. Or someone who once lived in the darkness of sin, and now can speak about how beautiful it is to live in the light of Christ. A past filled with tears can become an entryway into a ministry full of hope.
Jesus Himself said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That means we do not have to hide or erase our past by our own strength. What we need to do is come to Him, let His grace redeem us, and then allow Him to make it a tool to bless others.
So if today you still feel bound by your past, remember that in Christ nothing is wasted. God does not only redeem your future; He can also redeem your past and use it for His glory. Do not let shame silence you. Let your transformed life become a real witness to the power of God’s love.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You do not discard my past. You are able to redeem it and use it as a testimony for many people. Help me no longer to live in guilt, but to step forward in faith, believing that You can use my whole life journey for Your glory. Amen.
