Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

Let us do this with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer of our faith, and the one who brings our faith to perfection, who, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

And have you forgotten the exhortation that speaks to you as to children:

“My son, do not take lightly the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when you are rebuked by Him;

for the Lord disciplines the one He loves,
and He chastens everyone He receives as a son.”

If you must endure discipline, God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

But if you are without discipline, which all must undergo, then you are not sons, but illegitimate children.

Furthermore, we had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them; shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?

For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness.

Indeed, all discipline at the time it is given does not seem to be a cause of joy, but of sorrow. Yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Therefore strengthen the hands that hang down and the feeble knees;

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, a joyful assembly,

and to the congregation of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

and to Jesus, the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks more powerfully than the blood of Abel.

See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who warned them on earth, how much less shall we, if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven?

At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.”

The words “Yet once more” point to the removal of what can be shaken, because what cannot be shaken may remain.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks and worship God in a way that is pleasing to Him, with reverence and awe.
