Every believer has surely wondered, “Is this the voice of God or just my own thoughts?” This question is not only natural but also important in the journey of faith. We are not talking about an audible voice from heaven, but rather about the promptings of the heart, mind, or desires that arise and we feel come from God. So how do we distinguish them?
God’s Voice Is Always Consistent with the Word
God will never speak something that contradicts the Bible. If you feel God is leading you to do something, check whether it aligns with the principles of God’s Word. For example, if you feel prompted to make peace with someone, that aligns with Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” But if the prompting is to take revenge, it can be certain that it is not the voice of God.
God’s Voice Brings Peace, Not Chaos
God is the God of peace. In 1 Corinthians 14:33 it is written, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” When God speaks, even if it is to rebuke or warn, there will be peace in the heart. Conversely, one’s own thoughts tend to bring anxiety, fear, or impulsive urges that are not calm.
God’s Voice Encourages Obedience, Not Ego
God will not command us to do something that only satisfies personal desires or ego. God’s voice often leads us to live more humbly, more patiently, and to love others more, as in Galatians 5:22-23 which mentions the fruit of the Spirit. If the prompting you feel is to prove yourself or exalt your own name, it may not be from God.
God’s Timing Is Not Always Instant
Our own thoughts often want something quick and practical. But God’s voice sometimes tells us to wait. Like when Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb after four days (John 11:43-44), God has His own perfect timing. If you feel rushed and hurried without consideration, check again whether it is God’s voice or just your own desire.
Test with Prayer and Confirmation
One of the best ways to distinguish is by testing through prayer. Ask God to confirm through the Word, circumstances, or even advice from spiritually mature believers. In 1 John 4:1 it says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
God’s Voice Is Not Always What We Want
Sometimes, we want God to speak according to our desires. But God’s voice can also be a prohibition or direction that we do not like. Like when Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane said, “Not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39). This shows that God’s voice does not always satisfy our will, but leads us to obedience.
Conclusion
Distinguishing God’s voice is indeed not always easy. But the closer we are to God through prayer and the Word, the clearer we can discern which is God’s voice and which is just a passing thought. God is not playing riddles with us. He wants us to recognize His voice, just as sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd (John 10:27). The important thing is to remain humble and open to being shaped, because in a sincere heart, God surely speaks.
