This question often comes up in everyday life: what if we lie for a good purpose? For example, not telling the truth so someone won’t get hurt, or hiding something to keep the peace. Is that still considered sin in God’s eyes?
1. God Is the Source of Truth
The Bible affirms that God is a God who cannot lie. “God is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19). Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). In other words, God’s nature is truth itself, and as His children we are called to reflect His character.
2. Lies Always Have Consequences
Even if the intention seems good, a lie is still a lie. The Bible reminds us, “Do not lie to one another” (Colossians 3:9). A lie, no matter how small, can open the door to something bigger: loss of trust, bitterness, and even a habit. Sometimes what we think is “for the good” actually only delays the problem or covers it up.
3. There Is a “Lie to Save” Example in the Bible
Some people point to the story of Rahab, who hid the Israelite spies and lied to the people of Jericho (Joshua 2:4-6). Rahab was praised for her faith and courage (Hebrews 11:31), not for her lie. God saw her heart, which chose to side with Him, even though her way was not perfect. This shows that the Lord sovereignly works through fragile human situations, but truth remains God’s standard.
4. Speaking the Truth in Love
The key to Christian living is “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). That means we do not have to be harsh or hurtful when we are honest. We can choose wise words, timing, and manner. For example, being honest does not mean being blunt in a way that wounds, but being honest in a way that builds up.
5. When Truth Brings Risk
There are times when honesty can put us in a difficult position. Yet Jesus reminds us, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one” (Matthew 5:37). In other words, integrity is part of the Christian witness. Even if truth brings risk, God still cares for His children.
