The topic of hell always stirs both curiosity and fear. Some people say hell is only a metaphor, while others believe it is a real place of eternal suffering. What does the Bible actually say? Is hell truly real, or is it only a symbolic picture?
Hell in the New Testament
Jesus Himself often spoke about hell. In Matthew 10:28, He said: “Fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The word Jesus used is Gehenna, which refers to a valley outside Jerusalem that served as a garbage dump and was always burning with fire. That valley later became a picture of eternal punishment for those who reject God.
This shows that hell is not merely a moral illustration, but a serious spiritual reality.
Hell as a Place of Separation from God
In 2 Thessalonians 1:9 it is written: “They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might.”

Jesus described hell with the terms “unquenchable fire” (Mark 9:43) and “the outer darkness” where there is “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:12). These images may be symbolic, but the symbolism does not make hell any lighter; rather, it emphasizes how terrible the consequences of rejecting God are.
Both fire and darkness are symbols of suffering, destruction, and separation. So hell is a reality that must not be taken lightly.
Is God Cruel Because Hell Exists?
Some people struggle to accept the reality of hell because they feel it conflicts with God’s love. Yet the Bible teaches that God is just and holy. His love is shown in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, where He provided the way of salvation for everyone who believes (John 3:16).
If someone deliberately rejects that love, then the logical consequence is separation from God. Hell is not evidence of God’s cruelty, but the result of human choice in rejecting the Savior.
How Should Believers Respond?
For those of us who believe in Jesus, the existence of hell should not lead us to live in fear, but in gratitude because we have been saved. John 5:24 says: “Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
In addition, understanding hell should move us to love others, share the gospel, and bring them to Christ, so that they too will not perish.
