The issue of homosexuality is often a topic that sparks differing opinions, even among Christians themselves. Some consider it a legitimate expression of love, while others see it as contrary to God’s will. However, as believers, our standard of truth is not the majority opinion or the trends of the world, but the Word of God.
The Biblical Basis for Sexuality
From the beginning of creation, God established a clear pattern for sexual relationships. In Genesis 2:24 it is written, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This verse affirms that God’s plan is a marriage relationship between a man and a woman.
Several parts of the Bible also speak specifically about homosexuality, for example Leviticus 18:22: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Paul in the New Testament reaffirms this, for example in Romans 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, that same-sex relations are not in accordance with God’s design.

The Bible does state that homosexual acts are sin, just like adultery, greed, lying, or stealing. But we must distinguish between sin and the person who commits it. God loves everyone, including those who struggle with same-sex attraction, and invites them to receive His grace. John 3:16 affirms that salvation is available to “everyone who believes.”
Why Does the Bible Oppose It?
God does not simply forbid things without reason. All His laws and decrees are for human good. Homosexual relationships go against:
- Biological design – the bodies of men and women are created to complement each other physically and reproductively.
- Spiritual design – marriage symbolizes the relationship between Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:31-32), and this is portrayed through the man-woman relationship.

How Should Christians Respond?
Often, the church fails to balance truth and love. Truth without love can become harsh, while love without truth will let people drift. Jesus Himself is the perfect example: He rebuked sin but still loved sinners.
A biblical attitude toward those who struggle with homosexuality is:
- Do not judge personally, but gently explain the truth of God’s Word.
- Encourage repentance, just as we would counsel anyone living in sin.
- Provide spiritual support, so they may experience restoration by the power of the Holy Spirit.
