Woe to Ariel, Ariel,
the city where David encamped!
Let year after year
let the feasts come round again!

Yet I will distress Ariel,
so that there shall be mourning and lamentation,
and the city shall be to Me as an altar hearth.
3
I will encamp against you all around,
and will set up siege works against you,
and I will raise siege towers against you.
4
Then you shall be brought low; from the earth you shall speak,
and your speech shall come faintly from the dust;
your voice shall be like that of a ghost from the ground,
and your speech shall whisper from the dust.
5
But the multitude of your foes shall be like fine dust,
and the multitude of the ruthless like chaff that passes away.
For suddenly, in an instant,

you will be visited by the LORD of hosts
with thunder, earthquake, and loud noise,
with whirlwind and storm,
and the flame of a devouring fire.
7
And the multitude of all the nations
that fight against Ariel,
all who war against her and her stronghold,
and who distress her,
shall be like a dream, like a vision of the night:
8
as when a hungry man dreams that he is eating,
and when he awakes, his hunger is not satisfied;
or as when a thirsty man dreams that he is drinking,
and when he awakes, he is faint, and his throat is still parched;
so shall it be with the multitude of all the nations
that fight against Mount Zion.

Be stunned and amazed;
be blinded and blind!
Be drunk, but not with wine;
stagger, but not with strong drink!
10
For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep,
and has closed your eyes—the prophets—and covered your heads—the seers.
11
And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a sealed book.
When it is given to one who can read, saying,
“Read this, please,” he says,
“I cannot, for it is sealed.”

And when the book is given to one who cannot read, saying,
“Read this, please,” he says,
“I cannot read.”

And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor Me with their lips,
while their heart is far from Me,
and their worship of Me is but a commandment of men learned by rote,
14
therefore, behold, I will again do
wonderful things with this people,
wonder upon wonder;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”
15
Woe to those who hide their counsel deep from the LORD,
whose deeds are done in darkness,
and who say:
“Who sees us? and who knows us?”

How you turn things upside down!
Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
that what is made should say of its maker,
“He did not make me”;
and what is formed should say of him who formed it,
“He knows nothing”?
17
Is it not yet a very little while,
and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?
18
In that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a book,
and out of gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
19
The afflicted also shall increase their joy in the LORD,
and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel!
20
For the ruthless shall come to nothing,
and the scoffer shall be consumed,
and all who watch for evil shall be cut off,
21
who by a word make a man out to be guilty,
and lay a snare for him who reproves at the gate,
and turn aside the righteous with empty arguments.
22
Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob shall no more be ashamed,
and his face shall no more grow pale.
23
For when he sees his children,
the work of my hands, in his midst,
they will sanctify my name;
they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel;
24
they also who are wayward in spirit will come to understanding,
and those who murmur will accept instruction.”

Isaiah 29 is a stern prophecy against Jerusalem, called “Ariel” (meaning: “lion of God” or “altar of God”). The city boasts in outward worship but its heart is far from the Lord. The Lord warns that He will besiege the city, then expose the spiritual blindness of its leaders. Yet at the end of the chapter, there is a promise of restoration, where the humble will see light, and the wayward will return to the Lord.
📌 1. Warning to Ariel (Jerusalem) – Verses 1–8
“Woe to Ariel, the city where David encamped!”
- Jerusalem (Ariel) performs annual worship, but without heart
- The Lord will make the city pressed down and humbled like dust
- Yet its enemies who dream of conquering it will vanish like the shadow of a dream
🎯 The Lord does not seek ritual — He seeks a sincere heart.
📌 2. Spiritual Blindness because of Rejecting the Word – Verses 9–14
“Let them become blind… like one who reads a sealed book.”
- The prophets and leaders are spiritually blind — they do not understand the prophecy
- The people honor the Lord with their lips, but their hearts are far away
- So the Lord will do a marvelous work, confounding the wise
🎯 True faith is not about knowledge, but a humble and obedient heart.
📌 3. Turning Truth Upside Down – Verses 15–16
“Woe to those who hide their plans from the Lord…”
- People try to hide the intentions of their hearts from the Lord
- They think like a vessel that says to its maker: ‘He does not understand’
- This is spiritual pride, thinking the Lord does not know or care
🎯 Spiritual pride makes people blind to God’s truth.
📌 4. The Promise of Restoration and the Opening of Eyes – Verses 17–24
“At that time the deaf will hear… the blind will see.”
- The Lord promises that the humble will be restored
- The poor will rejoice in the Lord
- The oppressors, mockers, and slanderers will be destroyed
- Jacob (Israel) will be purified and live in righteousness
🎯 The Lord will open the spiritual eyes of the humble and remove the shame of His people.
