My brothers and sisters, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4
And let perseverance have its full effect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

That person must not think that he will receive anything from the Lord.
8
A double-minded person is unstable in all his ways.

Let the brother of humble circumstances boast in his exaltation,

and the rich in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a flower of the grass.
11
For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Blessed is the one who endures trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

When someone is tempted, let him not say, “This temptation comes from God!” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.
14
But each person is tempted by his own desire, as he is dragged away and enticed by it.
15
Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

My beloved brothers and sisters, do not be deceived!

Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
18
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be, in a certain sense, firstfruits among all his creatures.
19
My beloved brothers and sisters, know this: everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;
20
for human anger does not produce the righteousness of God.
21
Therefore, put away all filthiness and the abundance of evil, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror.
24
For he observes himself and goes away, and at once forgets what kind of man he was.
25
But whoever looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and continues in it, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his own heart, and his religion is worthless.
27
Pure and undefiled religion before God our Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
