The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.
3
For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bear them, and concerning their fathers who father them in this land:
4
They shall die of deadly diseases; they shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried; they shall become dung on the face of the ground; they shall be consumed by sword and famine; and their bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.

For thus says the LORD: Do not enter the house of mourning, and do not go to lament or to grieve with them, for I have taken away My peace from this people, says the LORD, My steadfast love and mercy.
6
Both great and small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried, and no one shall mourn for them; no one shall cut themselves or make themselves bald for them.
7
No one shall break bread for the mourner to comfort him because of the dead, nor shall anyone give him the cup of consolation for the death of his father or his mother.
8
You shall not enter the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink.
9
For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, in this place, before your eyes and in your days, I will put an end to the voice of gladness and the voice of joy, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
10
And when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great disaster against us? What is our iniquity, and what sin have we committed against the LORD our God?’
11
then you shall say to them: ‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me, says the LORD, and have gone after other gods and served them and worshiped them, but they have forsaken Me and have not kept My law.
12
And you have done worse than your fathers! For behold, each of you follows the stubbornness of his evil heart, refusing to listen to Me.
13
Therefore I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
14
Therefore, thus says the LORD,
behold, the days are coming when it shall no longer be said:
As the LORD lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt!,
15
but rather:
As the LORD lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where He had driven them!
For I will bring them back to their land that I gave to their fathers.
16
Behold, I am sending for many fishermen, says the LORD,
and they shall catch them;
afterward I will send for many hunters,
and they shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and out of the clefts of the rocks.
17
For My eyes are on all their ways;
they are not hidden from My face,
nor is their iniquity concealed from My eyes.
18
I will repay their iniquity and their sin double,
because they have defiled My land with the carcasses of their detestable idols
and have filled My inheritance with their abominations.”
19
O LORD, my strength and my fortress,
my refuge in the day of trouble!
To You the nations shall come
from the ends of the earth and say:
“Surely our fathers have inherited nothing but lies,
worthless idols that can do no good.”
20
Can a man make gods for himself?
Such are not gods!”

“Therefore, behold, I will make them know,
this once I will make them know
My power and My might,
so that they may know that My name is the LORD.”
⚰️🚫🌍 Summary of Jeremiah 16 – A Ban on Normal Life & Worldwide Judgment
Jeremiah 16 is the word of God that forbids Jeremiah to live like an ordinary man: not to marry, not to mourn, and not to feast. This becomes a sign that Judah will enter a time of extraordinary ruin in which normal life will no longer be possible. God makes clear that this judgment comes because of the sins of the ancestors and the descendants who kept worshiping idols. Yet at the end of the chapter, God gives a promise to gather His people back from all the world, as hope in the midst of His wrath.
📌 1. Prohibition of Marriage and Family (verses 1–4)
“Do not take a wife and do not have sons or daughters…”
➡️ God forbids Jeremiah from building a family because a time of great suffering is coming: children and parents will die without burial.
🎯 Jeremiah’s symbolic action reflects an extreme condition: there is no future in the midst of God’s wrath.
