Thus the word of the LORD came to me: “Go and buy a clay jar, and take with you some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests,

then go out to the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, which is in front of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you.

Say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing disaster upon this place, so that the ears of everyone who hears of it will ring.

Because they have forsaken Me and have made this place foreign to Me, and have burned offerings in it to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah knew. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

They have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, something I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever come into My heart.

Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
7
I will thwart the plans of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their lives. I will give their corpses as food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth.

I will make this city a horror and a hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be appalled and hiss because of all its wounds.

I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone will eat the flesh of his neighbor, in the distress and hardship brought on them by their enemies and by those who seek their lives.'”

Then break the jar in the sight of the men who go with you.
11
And say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, so that it cannot be made whole again. And Topheth shall become a place of burial, because there will be no other place to bury.

This is what I will do to this place, declares the LORD, and to its inhabitants. I will make this city like Topheth:”

The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall become defiled like the place of Topheth, that is, all the houses on whose roofs they burned offerings to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”

When Jeremiah came back from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, he stood in the court of the house of the LORD and said to all the people:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have spoken against them, because they have stiffened their necks and have not listened to my words.”
💥🏺🔥 Summary of Jeremiah 19 – The Broken Jar: A Sign of Inevitable Destruction
Jeremiah 19 continues the parable of the potter, but this time the Lord commands Jeremiah to break a clay jar as a symbol that Jerusalem will be utterly destroyed. Jeremiah brings the leaders and priests to the Valley of Ben-Hinnom (Topheth), where they carried out the burning of children as offerings, and delivers a prophecy about the Lord’s wrath that cannot be turned back. After that, Jeremiah breaks the jar before them, a sign that Judah’s destruction can no longer be repaired — like a shattered vessel.
📌 1. The Command to Buy a Jar and Bring the Leaders (verses 1–2)
“Take a clay jar…”
➡️ Jeremiah is commanded to buy a clay jar and bring the elders and priests to Topheth, in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom.

📌 2. The Charge: They Have Defiled This Place (verses 3–5)
“This place will be called the Valley of Slaughter…”
➡️ Judah has forsaken the Lord, burned offerings to other gods, and sacrificed their children — things the Lord never commanded.
🎯 These extreme sins call for great judgment — murder in the name of religion will not be overlooked by the Lord.

➡️ The Lord declares that Jerusalem will suffer siege, ruin, and such severe famine that cannibalism will occur.
🎯 When a nation rejects grace and opposes the Lord, the result is the most dreadful destruction.

“So also I will break this nation…”
➡️ Jeremiah broke the jar before all the people — as a symbol that there would be no more repentance or cancellation of the judgment.
➡️ The high places and houses of worship would become defiled and desolate.
