The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying:
Thus says the LORD:
I remember the devotion of your youth,
the love of your bridal days,
how you followed Me in the wilderness,
in a land not sown.

Israel was holy to the LORD then,
the firstfruits of His harvest.
All who ate of it became guilty;
disaster came upon them, declares the LORD.
4
Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,
and all the families of the house of Israel.

Thus says the LORD:
What wrong did your fathers find in Me,
that they went far from Me,
and followed worthless idols,
and became worthless themselves?
6
They did not say, ‘Where is the LORD,
who brought us up out of the land of Egypt,
who led us in the wilderness,
in a land of deserts and pits,
in a land of drought and deep darkness,
in a land that no one passes through,
and where no man dwells?’
7
I brought you into a fertile land
to enjoy its fruit and its good things.
But when you entered, you defiled My land;
you made My inheritance an abomination.
8
The priests did not say, ‘Where is the LORD?’
Those who handle the law did not know Me;
the shepherds rebelled against Me.
The prophets prophesied by Baal,
and followed things that profit nothing.
9
Therefore I will contend with you again, declares the LORD,
and with your children’s children I will contend.
10
Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and see;
send to Kedar and consider carefully!
See whether such a thing has happened:

Has a nation ever changed its gods,
even though they are not gods?
Yet My people have exchanged their Glory
for what does not profit.
12
Be appalled at this, O heavens,
and shudder and tremble greatly, declares the LORD.
13
For My people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
to hew out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
14
Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant?
Why then has he become plunder?
15
The young lions roar against him,
they raise their voices;
his land is laid waste,
his cities are burned, without inhabitant.
16
Even the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes
have shaved the crown of your head.
17
Have you not brought this upon yourself
by forsaking the LORD your God,
when He led you in the way?
18
And now, what gain is there for you to go to Egypt,
seeking to drink the waters of the Nile?
And what gain is there for you to go to Assyria,
seeking to drink the waters of the Euphrates?
19
Your wickedness will chastise you,
and your turning away will punish you!
Know and see how evil and bitter it is
for you to forsake the LORD your God,
and to have no fear of Me,
declares the Lord GOD of hosts.

For long ago you broke your yoke,
you tore off your bonds, and said:
I will not serve anymore.
Indeed, on every high hill
and under every leafy tree
you lay down and played the harlot.
21
Yet I had planted you as a choice vine,
as a seed wholly pure.
How then have you turned into a foul-smelling plant,
a wild vine!
22
Even if you wash yourself with lye,
and use much soap,
still the stain of your guilt remains before My eyes,
declares the Lord GOD.

How can you say: I have not defiled myself,
I have not followed the Baals?
Look at your way in the valley;
know what you have done:
O swift-footed young camel,
wandering here and there,
24
a wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness,
that sniffs the wind in her desire!
Who can restrain her passion?
All who seek her need not weary themselves;
they will find her in her mating season.
25
Keep your feet from going unshod,
and your throat from thirst!
But you said: It is hopeless! No!
For I love foreigners,
so I will follow them.

As the shame of a thief when he is caught,
so is the shame of the house of Israel,
that is, their kings, their officials,
their priests, and their prophets,
27
who say to a piece of wood: You are my father!
and to a stone: You gave me birth!
Surely they have turned their backs to Me
and not their faces toward Me;
yet in the time of their trouble they say:
Rise up and save us!
28
Where are your gods that you made for yourself?
Let them rise up, if they can save you
in the time of your trouble!
For as many as your cities are,
so many are your gods, O Judah!
29
Why do you want to contend with Me?
You have all rebelled against Me,
declares the LORD.
30
In vain I have struck your children;
they received no correction;
your own sword has devoured your prophets
like a destroying lion.
31
What kind of people are you?
Pay attention to the word of the LORD!
Have I become a wilderness for Israel
or a land of deep darkness?
Why then does My people say: We are free,
we will come to You no more?
32
Can a maiden forget her ornaments,
or a bride her sash?
Yet My people have forgotten Me
for countless days.
33
How well you direct your way
to seek love!
Therefore you have also trained
all your ways to evil.
34
Even on your garments is found
the blood of innocent poor people;
not at the time of breaking in did you find them!
Yet despite all this,
35
you say: I am innocent!
Surely His anger has turned away from me!
Behold, I will bring you to judgment,
because you say: I have not sinned!
36
How lightly you regard
changing your course!
You will also be put to shame because of Egypt,
as you were put to shame because of Assyria.
37
From there too you will go out
with your hands on your head,
for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trusted,
and you will not prosper with them.”

Jeremiah 2 is the first word of God through Jeremiah to the nation of Israel. In this chapter, God brings a case of love: how the people who once loved Him so deeply have now left Him and pursued other gods. Israel is accused of spiritual adultery — exchanging living water for “broken cisterns.” This is an emotional cry from God, heartbroken, yet still calling to repentance.

“You yourself have broken your yoke, you said: I do not want to be a servant!”
- This nation rebelled deliberately, not out of ignorance

Idolatry on the high places
Political ties with Egypt and Assyria
Refusing to repent even when warned

“Like a thief caught in shame, so is the condition of the house of Israel…”
- The Lord calls Israel like a faithless wife, worshiping wood and stone
- Though they cry out in disaster, they do not truly repent
- The Lord rejects false solutions and trust in foreign nations
