In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
3
Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and carried to Babylon.
4
And Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon, I will bring back to this place, declares the LORD. Indeed, I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon!”

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD,

the prophet Jeremiah said: “Amen! May the LORD do so! May the LORD fulfill the words that you have prophesied, by bringing back the vessels of the house of the LORD and all the exiles from Babylon to this place.

Only, please hear the word that I speak in your ears and in the ears of all this people:

The prophets who were before me and before you from of old prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms of war, disaster, and pestilence.
9
But as for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the prophet has truly been sent by the LORD.”

Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it.
11
And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the LORD: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within two years!” Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

“Go and tell Hananiah, ‘Thus says the LORD: You have broken wooden yokes, but in their place I will make yokes of iron!
14
For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put an iron yoke upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; indeed, they shall serve him. I have even given him the beasts of the field.'”

Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but you have made this people trust in a lie.”
16
Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you shall die, because you have urged rebellion against the LORD.”

So the prophet Hananiah died that same year, in the seventh month.
⚔️🪶🧢 Summary of Jeremiah 28 – The Clash of the True Prophet and the False Prophet: Hananiah vs. Jeremiah
Jeremiah 28 records the direct confrontation between the true prophet (Jeremiah) and the false prophet (Hananiah). In the presence of the priests and the people in the house of the LORD, Hananiah broke the wooden yoke from Jeremiah’s neck, and with great confidence prophesied that Babylon would fall within two years — the vessels of the temple and the exiles would be brought back. But God declared that Hananiah had lied, and as a result, he would die in that same year. Main message: False prophets give false hope, but God upholds His truth.
📌 1. Hananiah Delivers a False Prophecy of Peace (verses 1–4)
“Within two years I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon…”
➡️ Hananiah, the prophet from Gibeon, delivered a popular prophecy: Babylon would be defeated and all the exiles would return within two years.
➡️ He even called it the word of the LORD.
🎯 This prophecy pleased the ear, but it did not match the stern warning God gave through Jeremiah.
📌 2. Jeremiah Responds Carefully (verses 5–9)
“Amen! May the LORD do so!”
➡️ Jeremiah did not immediately rebuke Hananiah, but with irony hoped that the message of peace would prove true.
➡️ Yet he reminded them that a prophet of peace must be tested: does what he prophesies actually come to pass?

“Then Hananiah broke the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah.”
➡️ As a symbolic act, Hananiah broke Jeremiah’s wooden yoke in public, as though it marked the end of Babylon’s power.
🎯 This dramatic act drew attention, but it came from rebellion against the word of the Lord.
📌 4. The Lord Rebukes and Replaces It with an Iron Yoke (verses 12–14)
“I will make the wooden yoke into an iron yoke.”
➡️ The Lord sent Jeremiah back with this message: because the nations refuse to submit, Babylon’s yoke will now be an iron yoke — heavier and impossible to break.
🎯 The more the people reject the Lord’s discipline, the heavier the consequences become.
📌 5. Judgment on the Prophet Hananiah (verses 15–17)
“The Lord has not sent you… you have made this people trust in a lie.”
➡️ Jeremiah announced the Lord’s judgment on Hananiah: you will die this very year because you have led the people astray.
➡️ And Hananiah died two months later.
🎯 Deliberate spiritual error is no small matter — leading the Lord’s people astray is a grave sin.
