When Jerusalem was captured — in the ninth year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came with all his army to besiege Jerusalem;

in the eleventh year of Zedekiah’s reign, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the wall of the city was broken through —

then all the officers of the king of Babylon came and took their seat at the Middle Gate; they were Nergal-Sarezer, the chief of Sin-Magir, the commander, and Nebushazban, the chief officer, and the other officers of the king of Babylon.

When Zedekiah, king of Judah, and all the soldiers saw them, they fled and left the city by night, taking the way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward the Arabah of the Jordan.

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; they captured him and brought him to Riblah in the land of Hamath, to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who pronounced judgment on him.

The king of Babylon had the sons of Zedekiah slaughtered before his eyes at Riblah; and the king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah.

Then he blinded Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with bronze chains to take him to Babylon.

The Chaldeans burned the king’s palace and the houses of the people with fire, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.
9
Then Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who remained in the city, and the deserters who had gone over to him, and the rest of the craftsmen.

But some of the people, namely the poor who had nothing, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah. At that time he also gave them vineyards and fields.

Concerning Jeremiah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had given orders through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying:

“Take him and look after him; do him no harm, but do for him whatever he asks of you!”

So Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, together with Nebushazban, the chief officer, and Nergal-Sarezer, the commander, and all the high officers of the king of Babylon, sent men —
14
they had Jeremiah taken from the court of the guard and handed him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, to set him free, so that he might go home. Thus Jeremiah stayed among the people.

While Jeremiah was still confined in the court of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him, saying:

“Go to Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian and say to him: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing My words upon this city for harm and not for good, and they shall be fulfilled before your eyes on that day.
17
On that day also, declares the LORD, I will deliver you, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men whom you fear,
18
but I will surely rescue you: you shall not fall by the sword; your life shall be as plunder to you, because you have trusted in Me, declares the LORD.”
🔥🏰⛓ Summary of Jeremiah 39 – The Fall of Jerusalem and God’s Care for Jeremiah
Jeremiah 39 records the long-predicted event that finally came to pass: Jerusalem fell into the hands of Babylon. King Zedekiah tried to flee, but was captured and met a tragic end. Meanwhile, Jeremiah was protected by God, and Ebed-Melech also received a promise of deliverance because of his faith. This chapter highlights the faithfulness of God’s word, both in judgment and in protection.

“In the ninth year of Zedekiah… Jerusalem was besieged…”

“I will save you on that day…”
➡️ The word of the Lord came to Ebed-Melech, who had earlier rescued Jeremiah (Jer. 38):
- He will be rescued from the hand of his enemies
- He will not fall by the sword
- He will have his life as a spoil, because he trusted in the Lord
🎯 Faith and action will be rewarded by the Lord, even when done by someone outside and of little standing.
