In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah son of Elishama, of the royal family and one of the chief officers of the king, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating bread together at Mizpah,

Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan with the sword; thus Ishmael killed him who had been appointed by the king of Babylon over the land.

Ishmael also struck down all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans, the soldiers, who were there.

The next day after he had killed Gedaliah—while no one yet knew it—

there came men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men in all, with their beards shaved, their clothes torn, and their bodies gashed; they had grain offerings and incense to bring to the house of the LORD.

Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam!”

But when they came into the midst of the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, with the help of the men who were with him, slaughtered them; and their bodies were thrown into the cistern.

But among them were ten men who said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have hidden stores in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he spared them and did not kill them with their companions.

Now the cistern into which Ishmael threw all the bodies of the men he had killed was the great cistern that King Asa had made in view of Baasha king of Israel; this was the one Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled with the slain bodies.

Then Ishmael carried away captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had placed under Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah carried them away captive and set out to cross over to the territory of the Ammonites.

But when Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael son of Nethaniah had done,

they gathered all their men and went to fight against Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They met him by the great pool that is in Gibeon.

When all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him, they rejoiced.

So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.

But Ishmael son of Nethaniah escaped from the hand of Johanan with eight men and went to the land of the Ammonites.

Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him gathered up all the remnant of the people whom Ishmael son of Nethaniah had carried away captive from Mizpah, after he had struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam: the men, the soldiers, the women, the children, and the court officials whom he had brought back from Gibeon,

and they went on and stopped at the lodging place of Kimham near Bethlehem, intending to go on to Egypt,

to escape the Chaldeans, whom they feared, because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

Jeremiah 41 records the tragic events after the fall of Jerusalem: Gedaliah, the governor appointed by Babylon and a symbol of hope for restoration, was killed by Ishmael son of Nethaniah. This coup not only ended peaceful leadership, but also led to the slaughter of the Jews and Babylonians at Mizpah, as well as great fear, so that the people wanted to flee to Egypt. This is a story of betrayal, bloodshed, and ruin brought on by personal ambition, adding to the suffering of an already oppressed people.

“Ishmael killed seventy men… and cast their bodies into the cistern.”
➡️ Ishmael slaughtered 70 pilgrims from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria who came with offerings and incense to the house of the LORD.

➡️ Ishmael then took captive all the remaining people of Mizpah, including the king’s daughters, and brought them to Ammon.

“When Johanan heard of the evil deed… he pursued Ishmael…”
➡️ Johanan son of Kareah and the faithful fighters pursued Ishmael as far as the great pool at Gibeon.
➡️ The captives whom Ishmael had taken fled and joined Johanan.
➡️ But Ishmael managed to escape to the land of Ammon with eight of his men.
🎯 Courage can stop evil, though it does not always solve every problem.

“They were afraid of the Chaldeans…”
➡️ Johanan and the survivors stayed for a time at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem.
➡️ They now feared retaliation from Babylon because of the killing of Gedaliah and the Chaldean soldiers.
➡️ In the end they planned to flee to Egypt.
