Concerning the Ammonites. Thus says the LORD: “Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its cities?

Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will sound the alarm of war against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It shall become a desolate mound, and its villages shall be burned with fire; then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,” says the LORD.
3
Wail, O Heshbon, for the destroyer has come up against you; cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth, lament, and go about with self-inflicted wounds, for Milcom shall go into exile, together with his priests and his officials.

How you boast in your valleys, O proud daughter, who trust in your treasures, saying, ‘Who will come against me?’

Behold, I am bringing terror upon you,” declares the Lord GOD of hosts, “from all those around you; each of you shall be driven headlong, and there will be no one to gather the fugitives.
6
But afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites,” declares the LORD.

Concerning Edom. Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom rotted away?
8
Flee, turn back, hide in deep places, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring disaster upon Esau at the time when I punish him.
9
If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only what they wanted?
10
But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, so that he cannot conceal himself. His offspring are destroyed, and his brothers and his neighbors are no more.
11
Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive, and let your widows trust in me.”
12
For thus says the LORD: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink it.
13
For by myself I have sworn,” declares the LORD, “that Bozrah shall become a horror, a reproach, a ruin, and a curse, and all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.”
14
A report I have heard from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Gather together, go against her, prepare for battle!
15
For behold, I will make you small among the nations, despised among men.
16
Your terror has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who occupy the heights of the hill! Though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there,” says the LORD.
17
Edom shall become a desolation; everyone who passes by it shall be appalled and hiss because of all its wounds.
18
As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities were overthrown — says the LORD — no one shall dwell there anymore, and no human being shall live in it.
19
Behold, like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan against a pasture of sheep, so I will suddenly drive them from it and appoint over it the one whom I choose. For who is like Me? Who can summon Me to account? And what shepherd can stand against Me?
20
Therefore hear the plan that the LORD has made against Edom, and the purposes that He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their pasture shall be appalled at them.
21
The earth shall tremble at the sound of their fall; their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea.
22
Behold, he shall come up and fly like an eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah. The heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be like the heart of a woman in labor.”
23
Concerning Damascus. “Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news; they melt in fear, they cannot be quiet.
24
Damascus has grown feeble, she turns to flee; panic has seized her, anguish and labor pains have taken hold of her like a woman in childbirth.
25
How the praised city is forsaken, the city of joy!
26
Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be silenced in that day,” says the LORD of hosts.
27
I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.”
28
Concerning Kedar and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down. Thus says the LORD: “Rise up, go against Kedar, and destroy the people of the east!”

Their tents and their flocks shall be taken away completely, their tent curtains and all their goods; their camels shall be carried off in full, and men shall cry out to them: Terror on every side!
30
Flee, wander far away, hide in the depths, O inhabitants of Hazor! says the LORD. For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you and has devised a plan against you.
31
Rise up, go against a nation at ease, that dwells securely,” says the LORD, “that has neither gates nor bars, that dwells alone!
32
Their camels shall become plunder, and their many livestock shall become spoil. I will scatter to every wind those who cut the corners of their hair, and from every side I will bring disaster upon them,” says the LORD.
33
Hazor shall become a dwelling place for jackals, a desolation forever; no one shall dwell there again, and no human being shall live in it.”

The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah:

Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief part of their strength.
36
I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and I will scatter them to all those winds, so that there shall be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam shall not come.
37
I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, even my burning anger,” says the LORD. “I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.
38
I will set my throne in Elam, and I will destroy from there the king and the princes,” says the LORD.
39
But in the latter days I will restore the fortunes of Elam,” says the LORD.
🌪️🔥🛡️ Summary of Jeremiah 49 – Judgment on the Neighboring Nations: Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar, and Elam
Jeremiah 49 contains a series of prophecies of judgment against five nations that were enemies or neighbors of Israel: Ammon, Edom, Damascus (Aram/Syria), Kedar and Hazor (nomadic peoples in Arabia), and Elam (early Persia). God declares that their pride, violence, and idolatry will bring about their ruin. Yet, as with Moab, God still includes a promise of restoration for Elam in the future.
📌 1. Ammon – A Land Without an Heir? (verses 1–6)
“Has Israel no sons?…”
➡️ The Ammonites seized Israel’s land (Gilead) when Israel was carried away into exile.
➡️ The Lord declares that Ammon will be destroyed, and their god, Molech, will be carried off together with his priests.
➡️ Yet the Lord promises that He will restore Ammon in the future.
🎯 A nation that seizes the inheritance of God’s people will be shamed and judged.
📌 2. Edom – Pride That Is Judged (verses 7–22)
“The pride of your heart has deceived you…”
➡️ Edom (the descendants of Esau) was known for its strong and hard-to-reach geographical position.
➡️ They relied on their wisdom and their rock fortresses.
➡️ The Lord will overturn Edom and make it desolate.
🎯 No human strength, location, or wisdom can withstand the wrath of God.
📌 3. Damascus – A City Shocked and Fleeing (verses 23–27)
“Damascus has become fainthearted, fleeing in panic…”
➡️ This prophecy describes fear and sudden ruin upon Damascus, the great city of Aram/Syria.
➡️ Fire will break out in the important cities and consume its fortresses.
🎯 The Lord brings down the city that relies on its reputation and strength.
📌 4. Kedar and Hazor – Nomadic Peoples Attacked (verses 28–33)
“Rise up, advance against Kedar… take their tents and their livestock!”
➡️ These desert peoples will be attacked by Babylon, destruction will come suddenly.
➡️ They will become a dwelling place for jackals and a desolation forever.
🎯 A false sense of security in isolation does not guarantee escape from the hand of the Lord.
📌 5. Elam – Destroyed, Yet to Be Restored (verses 34–39)
“I will break the bow of Elam… and scatter them among all nations.”
➡️ The Lord will destroy Elam with confusion and exile.
➡️ But at the end of the prophecy: “I will restore the fortunes of Elam in the latter days.”
🎯 God’s judgment is meant for restoration, if they are willing to repent.
