Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:

“Can a human being be of use to God? No; the one who is wise is useful only to himself.
3
Is it any gain to the Almighty if you are righteous, or any profit if you live uprightly?
4
Is it because of your reverence for God that He reproves you, and brings you into judgment?
5
Is not your wickedness great, and your sins without end?
6
For you have taken pledges from your brothers without cause, and stripped the clothing from the needy;
7
you have given no water to the thirsty, and no food to the hungry,
8
but the strong man possessed the land, and the honored man dwelt in it.
9
You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of the fatherless you have crushed.
10
That is why snares surround you, and sudden terror overwhelms you.
11
Your light has become darkness, so that you cannot see, and a flood covers you.
12
Is not God in the height of heaven? Look at the highest stars, how lofty they are!
13
But you say: What does God know? Can He judge through the dark clouds?
14
Clouds cover Him, so that He cannot see; He walks about on the vault of heaven!
15
Will you keep to the old path, which wicked men have trodden,
16
who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was swept away by a river;
17
who said to God: Depart from us! and: What can the Almighty do to us?
18
Yet it was He who filled their houses with good things — but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19
The righteous saw it and rejoiced; the innocent mocked them:
20
Surely our adversaries have been cut off, and what remained of them has been consumed by fire.
21
Be friendly with Him, so that you may be at peace; in this way you will gain profit.
22
Receive instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.
23
If you return to the Almighty and humble yourself; if you remove unrighteousness from your tent,
24
and cast your gold into the dust, the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brook,
25
then the Almighty will be your treasure, and your silver wealth,
26
and truly you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God.
27
If you pray to Him, He will answer you, and you will pay your vows.
28
If you decide to do a thing, it will be accomplished for you, and light will shine on your ways.
29
For God brings low the proud, but he saves the one who bows down!
30
He delivers the innocent: you are delivered because of the cleanness of your hands.”

In Job 22, Eliphaz the Temanite speaks for the third time, and this time he no longer hides his accusation — he attacks Job directly and accuses him of many social wrongs: taking pledges, refusing water to the thirsty, and oppressing widows.
