I say to you, truly, whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber;

but whoever enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

To him the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

When he has brought out all his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.

But a stranger they will certainly not follow; instead they flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

This is what Jesus said to them in a parable, but they did not understand what he meant when he spoke this to them.

So Jesus said again, “Truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

All who came before me are thieves and robbers, and the sheep did not listen to them.

I am the door; whoever enters through me will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep;

but a hired man, who is not a shepherd and does not own the sheep himself, when he sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf seizes and scatters the sheep.

He runs away because he is a hired man and does not care for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and my sheep know me,

just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

I have other sheep also, which are not of this fold; I must lead them also, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.

For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own will. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. Many of them said:

“He has a demon and is mad; why do you listen to him?”

The others said, “These are not the words of one who is possessed by a demon; can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Then came the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem; it was winter.

And Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s portico.

So the Jews gathered around Him and said to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered them, “I have told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these bear witness about Me,

but you do not believe, because you are not among My sheep.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me,

and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

Again the Jews picked up stones to stone Jesus.

Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from My Father; for which of them are you going to stone Me?”

The Jews answered Him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a man, make Yourself equal with God.”

Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’?

If those to whom the word came were called gods—and Scripture cannot be broken—,

do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

If I am not doing the works of My Father, do not believe Me;

but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me and I am in the Father.”

Again they tried to seize Him, but He escaped from their hands.

Then He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there.

🧾 Summary of John 10

In John 10, Jesus gives two important parables: the Door for the sheep and the Good Shepherd. He explains His relationship with His people as a relationship of love, sacrifice, and protection, unlike religious leaders who seek only personal gain. At the end of the chapter, Jesus openly declares His divinity.

1. Jesus as the Door and the Good Shepherd (verses 1–21)

The first parable: The sheep only listen to their shepherd’s voice; thieves and robbers do not enter by the door.
Jesus said:

“I am the door; whoever enters through Me will be saved.” (verse 9)

Then He said:

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” (verse 11)

A hired hand will flee when the wolf comes, but the true shepherd protects his sheep.
Jesus declared that He lays down His life, but also takes it up again, foretelling His death and resurrection.
The people were divided about Him: some said He had a demon, while others said: “A man possessed by a demon could not speak like this.”

2. Jesus and the Jews at the Temple (verses 22–39)

At the Feast of Dedication of the Temple (Hanukkah), the Jews pressed Jesus to state plainly whether He was the Messiah.
Jesus answered that His works were already proof, but they did not believe because they were not His sheep.

“My sheep hear My voice… I know them and they follow Me.” (verse 27)

“I and the Father are one.” (verse 30)

The Jews were angry and wanted to stone Him because they considered Him to be blaspheming God.

3. Jesus Goes Across the Jordan (verses 40–42)

Jesus withdrew to the other side of the Jordan River, where John had once baptized.
Many came to Him and believed in Him, because they recognized that everything John had said about Jesus was true.

Salvation comes only through Jesus: He is the Door to eternal life.

We live in a world full of voices that seek to lead us. Yet, the true sheep listen only to Jesus’ voice.
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus does not only lead, but is also willing to die so that His sheep may live.
We are not only saved, but also personally kept and known by Jesus.
When the world rejects Jesus, His sheep still believe and follow Him.
John 10 emphasizes eternal security for believers:

“No one can snatch them out of My hand.” (verse 28)
