“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that bears fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

You are already clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch and withers; then people gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given to you.

By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; remain in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command you.

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I heard from my Father.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

These things I command you, that you love one another.”

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world, and I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Remember what I have said to you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My word, they will also keep your word.

But all these things they will do to you because of My name, because they do not know Him who sent Me.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin!

Whoever hates Me hates My Father also.

If I had not done among them the works that no one else ever did, they would have no sin. But now, even though they have seen all this, they hate both Me and My Father.

But the word written in their law must be fulfilled: They hated Me without cause.

When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me.

And you also must testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”

In John 15, Jesus continues His teaching to His disciples with a very powerful image: He is the true vine, and the disciples are His branches. Jesus emphasizes the importance of abiding in Him, bearing fruit, and loving one another. He also warns about the hatred of the world toward His followers.
1. Jesus: The True Vine (verses 1–8)
- Jesus said:
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.” (verse 1)
- A branch that does not bear fruit will be cut off, while the fruitful one will be cleansed so that it may bear more fruit.
- Jesus emphasized:
“Abide in Me, and I in you.” (verse 4)
- Without Jesus, we can do nothing spiritually.
- Whoever abides in Jesus will bear much fruit, and whatever is asked in Jesus’ name will be granted.
2. Love and Obedience (verses 9–17)
- Jesus invites the disciples to abide in His love.
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.” (verse 12)
- Jesus shows that the greatest love is:
“Greater love has no one than this, that a person lay down his life for his friends.” (verse 13)
- He calls His disciples friends, not servants, because they know what He is doing.
- A disciple is chosen and appointed to go and bear lasting fruit.
3. The World Hates the Followers of Christ (verses 18–27)
- Jesus warned that the world would hate His disciples, just as it had hated Him first.
- The world hates them because they are not of the world, but chosen by Jesus.
- This hatred shows rejection of the Father as well, because whoever rejects Jesus rejects the Father.
- Jesus reminded them that this is the fulfillment of the Law:
“They hated Me without a cause.” (verse 25)
- The Holy Spirit, the Helper from the Father, will come to bear witness about Jesus.
- The disciples are also called to bear witness because they have been with Jesus from the beginning.
