On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;

Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the wedding.

When they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

Jesus said to her, “Woman, what do you want from Me? My hour has not yet come.”

But the mother of Jesus said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it!”

Now there were six stone water jars there, set for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding two or three measures.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim.

Then He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

When the master of the feast tasted the water that had become wine—and he did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew—he called the bridegroom

and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

This, the first of His signs, Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and He revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

After this He went down to Capernaum, with His mother and His brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.

When the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

In the temple He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers sitting there.

And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

And to those who sold doves He said, “Take these things away from here; do not make My Father’s house a house of trade.”

His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”

So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign can You show us, since You do these things?”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

Then the Jews said to Him, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”

But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

Therefore, when He was raised from among the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Now while He was in Jerusalem during the Passover feast, many believed in His name, seeing the signs that He was doing.

But Jesus Himself did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew them all,

and because He had no need for anyone to testify concerning man, for He knew what was in man’s heart.

📖 John 2 – The First Miracle & Jesus Cleanses the Temple

🧾 Summary of John 2

This chapter presents two important events:

1. Jesus’ first miracle at Cana, when He turned water into wine.
2. Jesus cleanses the Temple from merchants and money changers.

1. The Wedding at Cana – Water Turned to Wine (verses 1–11)

• Jesus, His mother Mary, and the disciples attended a wedding in Cana of Galilee.
• When the wine ran out, Mary told Jesus.
• Jesus answered that His hour had not yet come, yet He still performed the miracle.
• He told the servants to fill the water jars, and the water was changed into the finest wine.

“This was the first sign Jesus did… and His disciples believed in Him.” (verse 11)

👉 Meaning:
This shows Jesus’ power over creation, and reveals His glory symbolically to the disciples.

2. Jesus Cleanses the Temple (verses 13–25)

• Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover.
• In the Temple courts, He saw sellers of oxen, sheep, doves, and money changers.
• He made a whip of cords and drove them out:

“Do not make My Father’s house a house of trade!” (verse 16)

• When His authority was challenged, He said:

“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”
They did not understand that He was speaking of His own body.

👉 Meaning:
Jesus affirmed that true worship must be pure and that He is the true Temple, the center of God’s new presence.

📘 Main Teachings of John 2

1. Jesus cares about people’s everyday needs, including the joy and honor of a family at a wedding feast.
2. Jesus’ miracles are not for display, but to reveal the glory of God and to deepen faith.
3. Worship must not be defiled by greed or commercialism.
4. Jesus’ body is the fulfillment of the Temple – the center of worship and God’s presence in the world.
5. Jesus knows what is in the human heart (verse 25) – we cannot hide our motives from Him.

✨ Spiritual Meaning of John 2

• Water turned into wine shows that Jesus brings a transition from law to grace, from old ritual to new life.
• In a life that has “run out of wine,” Jesus is able to refill it with true joy.
• He is not only Lord over nature, but also Lord over our hearts and worship.
• Sincerity in worship and in relationship with God must be valued above formality.
• We are called to be a temple of the Holy Spirit that is living and clean.
