After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, that is, the Sea of Tiberias.

A great crowd kept following Him, because they saw the signs of healing that He was doing among the sick.

And Jesus went up on the mountain and sat there with His disciples.

Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

When Jesus looked around and saw that a great crowd was coming to Him, He said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”

He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do.

Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for them, even if each one were to receive only a little.”

One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him:

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?”

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in that place. So the people sat down, about five thousand men in number.

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were seated there; likewise also with the fish, as much as they wanted.

And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces, so that nothing may be wasted.”

So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves left over after the people had eaten.

When the people saw the sign that He had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Since Jesus knew that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.

When evening had begun to fall, His disciples went down to the sea and got into the boat

and crossed over to Capernaum. By now it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

The sea was rough because a strong wind was blowing.

After they had rowed about two or three miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat, and they were afraid.

But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid!”

Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore to which they were going.

On the next day the crowd that had remained on the other side saw that there was no other boat there except the one, and that Jesus had not gone into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone away alone.

But meanwhile some other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread, after the Lord had given thanks for it.

When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they got into those boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.

When the crowd found Jesus on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate the bread and were filled.

Work, not for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”

Then they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may do the works of God?”

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in Him whom God has sent.”

So they said to Him, “What sign will You do, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You perform?

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'”

Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.

But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet you do not believe.

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.

For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

And this is the will of Him who sent Me: that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but raise it up at the last day.

For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Then the Jews began to grumble about Him, because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

It is written in the prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.

Not that anyone has seen the Father, except Him who is from God; He has seen the Father.

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.

Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

The Jews then argued among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.

Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.

As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on Me will live because of Me.

This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Jesus said these things in Capernaum while He was teaching in the synagogue.

When many of His disciples heard this, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”

Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this offend you?

And what then if you should see the Son of Man ascending to the place where He was before?

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing at all. The words that I speak to you are spirit and life.

But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who did not believe and who would betray Him.

And He said: “For this reason I have said to you: No one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”

From that time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him.

Simon Peter answered Him: “Lord, to whom shall we go? Your words are words of eternal life;

1. Jesus Feeds 5,000 People (verses 1–15)

• Jesus gave thanks and distributed them to more than 5,000 people.
• After everyone was filled, 12 baskets full were still left over.

2. Jesus Walks on the Water (verses 16–21)

• At night, the disciples in the boat faced a strong wind.
• Jesus came to them walking on the water, and said:

“I am He; do not be afraid!” (verse 20)

• They received Him, and the boat reached shore safely.

3. Jesus, the Bread of Life (verses 22–59)

• The crowd pursued Jesus because they wanted free food.
• Jesus rebuked them and said:

“Work, not for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life…” (verse 27)

• They asked: “What must we do to do the works of God?”

Jesus answered: “This is the work of God: that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” (verse 29)

• They asked for a sign like manna in the wilderness. Jesus answered:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger again…” (verse 35)

• He said that His flesh is food and His blood is drink – which points to the Eucharist/Holy Communion.
• Many said: “This saying is hard. Who can listen to it?” (verse 60)

4. Many Disciples Leave Jesus (verses 60–71)

• Because of this teaching, many disciples left Him.
