but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Early in the morning He was again in the temple, and all the people came to Him. He sat down and taught them.

Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They placed the woman in the midst

and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.

Moses in the law commanded us to stone such women. What do You say about it?”

They said this to test Him, so that they might have something to accuse Him of. But Jesus bent down and wrote with His finger on the ground.

And when they kept on asking Him, He stood up and said to them, “Let him among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at the woman.”

Then He bent down again and wrote on the ground.

But when they heard that saying, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained there.

Then Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

She answered, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more from now on.”

Then Jesus spoke again to the crowd, saying, “I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The Pharisees said to Him, “You bear witness about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.”

Jesus answered them, saying, “Even if I bear witness about Myself, My testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from and where I am going.

You judge according to human standards; I judge no one,

and if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.

And in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid;

I am the one who bears witness about Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness about Me.”

Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “Neither Me nor My Father do you know. If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”

These words Jesus spoke near the treasury, while He was teaching in the temple. And no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.

Then Jesus said again to the crowd, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”

Then He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

That is why I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

So they said to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all?

I have many things to say and to judge concerning you; but He who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him, this I speak to the world.”

They did not understand that He was speaking to them about the Father.

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.

And He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”

After Jesus said these things, many believed in Him.

Then He said to the Jews who believed in Him, “If you remain in My word, you are truly My disciples

They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.

And a slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, yet you seek to kill Me because My word finds no place in you.

They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

But now you seek to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; Abraham did not do such things.

You are doing the works of your own father.” They answered, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, namely God.”

Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, because I came out from God and came from God. And I came not on My own will, but He who sent Me.

Why do you not understand My speech? Because you cannot grasp My word.

The devil is your father, and you want to do the desires of your father. He has been a murderer from the beginning and does not live in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me.

Which of you proves that I am guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?

Whoever is from God hears the word of God; that is why you do not hear it, because you are not from God.”

The Jews answered Jesus, “Is it not right that we say you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

But I do not seek honor for Myself; there is One who seeks it, and He also judges.

The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. For Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say, ‘Whoever keeps My word will never see death forever.’

Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets also died; whom do You make Yourself out to be?”

Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing at all. It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God,’

though you do not know Him, but I know Him. And if I said, ‘I do not know Him,’ I would be a liar, just like you; but I know Him and I keep His word.

Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.”
