In those days there was no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of Dan was seeking an inheritance for itself to dwell in, for until that day no inheritance had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.

So the Danites sent from their clan five men from among their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and explore it, and they said to them, “Go, explore the land.” When they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they spent the night there.

When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite, so they turned aside there and said to him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place, and what is your business here?”

He said to them, “Micah has done this and that for me; he has hired me, and I have become his priest.”

Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God, that we may know whether the journey on which we are going will prosper.”

The priest said to them, “Go in peace. The journey on which you are going is under the LORD’s favor.”

Then the five men departed and came to Laish. They saw that the people who lived there were secure, living in the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting. They lacked nothing in the world and were wealthy. They were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.

When they returned to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What did you find there?”

They answered, “Arise, let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and indeed it is very good. Are you still sitting still? Do not be slow to go in and take possession of the land.
10
When you enter, you will come to a people living in security, and the land is broad on both sides. Truly, God has given it into your hand; it is a place where nothing is lacking that is on the earth.”

Then from there, from Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men of the clan of Dan set out, armed with weapons of war.
12
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. Therefore that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; it is west of Kiriath-jearim.

From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah.

Then the five men who had gone to spy out the region of Laish said to their brothers, “Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a cast image? Now consider what you should do.”

Then they went on from there and came to the house of the young Levite, at Micah’s house, and asked him how he was.

Meanwhile the six hundred men of the Danites, armed for war, stood at the entrance of the gate.

And the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up, entered there, and took the carved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image. Now the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed for war.

But when the others had gone into Micah’s house and taken the carved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
19
But they answered him, “Be silent, put your hand over your mouth, and come with us, and be our father and priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?”

So the priest’s heart was glad. He took the ephod, the teraphim, and the carved image, and went among the people.

Then they turned and went on, with the children, the livestock, and the valuables placed before them.

When they had gone far from Micah’s house, the men who lived near Micah’s house were summoned, and they pursued the Danites.
23
They called out to the Danites, and the Danites turned and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you have gathered your men?” And he answered,
24
“My gods, which I made, and the priest, you have taken away, and you have gone. What more do I have? How then can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
25
And the Danites said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry men fall upon you, and you lose your life and the lives of your household.”
26
Then the Danites went on their way. And when Micah saw that they were stronger than he, he turned and went back to his house.
27
So the Danites took what Micah had made, and also his priest, and came to Laish, to a people living securely and quietly. They struck the people with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire.

There was no one to rescue them, because the city was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone. It was in the valley of Beth-rehob. Then the Danites rebuilt the city and lived in it.

They named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was formerly Laish.

The Danites set up for themselves the carved image, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons became priests to the tribe of Dan until the land was carried away into exile.

So they set up for themselves Micah’s carved image, which he had made, and it remained there all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
🛡️📿🏞️ Summary of Judges 18 – The Idol Is Stolen and Worshiped by the Tribe of Dan
This chapter continues the story of Micah and the Levite priest, but with a greater escalation of sin. This time, the whole tribe of Dan is led astray, stealing Micah’s idol and priest, and establishing false worship in a new place.
📌 1. The Tribe of Dan Seeks an Inheritance (verses 1–6)
- The tribe of Dan had not yet received its inheritance territory, so they sent 5 spies to search for new land.
- They came to Micah’s house, recognized the voice of the Levite priest, and asked:
“Who are you, and what are you doing here?”
- The priest explained that he had been hired by Micah as a private priest, and then they asked for the Lord’s blessing on their journey. The priest said:
“Go in peace… your journey is favored by the LORD.”
🎯 When a priest has no integrity, even God’s word is used for convenience.
📌 2. The Reconnaissance of Laish (verses 7–10)
- They found the city of Laish, peaceful and prosperous, but without allies or protection.
- They returned and gave their report:
“Arise, let us go up and take possession of the land!”
🎯 Another’s weakness is used as an opportunity for oppression — no mercy, only expansion.
📌 3. 600 Danites Head Toward Laish and Pass Micah (verses 11–20)
- 600 armed men from Dan set out toward Laish.
- They passed by Micah’s house, and the spies suggested stealing the idol and its priest.
- They took the ephod, the teraphim, and the carved image, then persuaded the priest to go with them:
“It is better for you to be a priest to an entire tribe… than to one household only.”
- The priest was pleased and went with them.
🎯 When status matters more than loyalty, worship becomes a transaction.
📌 4. Micah Pursues but Is Powerless (verses 21–26)
- Micah and his neighbors pursued the Danite company, crying out for their belongings to be returned.
- The Danites threatened Micah:
“Do not let your voice be heard… lest violent men fall upon you.”
- Micah realized he could do nothing, and returned home in distress.
🎯 Human-made religion has no power — once it is stolen, everything is lost.
📌 5. The Establishment of the Idol in Laish (verses 27–31)
- The Danites conquered the city of Laish, killed its inhabitants, and built a new city named Dan.
- They set up the idol image and installed the priest descended from Moses (Jonathan son of Gershom).
- They worshiped the idol throughout the whole time the tabernacle of the LORD was at Shiloh.
🎯 This false worship became the tradition of the tribe of Dan — a legacy of sin passed down through the generations.
